유럽중심주의 세계사에 대한 비판과 반비판을 넘어 (Beyond Criticism and Recriticism on Eurocentric History of World)

초록

유럽중심주의 세계사를 비판하는 과정에서 세계사에서 동아시아를 강조하는 프랑크와 캘리포니아학파의 견해와 라틴아메리카의 근대성/식민성 연구그룹을 구체적으로 연구하게 되었다. 프랑크는 I. 월러스틴의 자본주의 세계체제론를 비판하면서 근대이전에도 세계체제가 오랫동안 존재했으면, 1400-1800년까지 아시아가 세계체제의 중심이었다고 주장하였다. 프랑크는 마르크주의 역사가들의 유럽중심주의 역사가 유럽예외주의에 불과한 것이라고 강하게 비판하였다. 프랑크는 아시아를 세계사속에서 복원하는 데 기여를 했으나, 그 과정에서 지나치게 중국 중심의 아시아를 강조했다는 점에서 한계가 있다. 또한 그의 입장은 자본주의 세계체제내의 내적 구조변혁과 결합되지 않을 경우 현재의 신자유주의 자본논리를 강화시킬 소지를 안고 있기 때문에, 자본주의 세계체제 내부의 계급적, 구조적 모순을 해결할 방향을 동시에 모색해나갈 필요가 있다.
라틴아메리카 근대성/식민성 연구그룹은 아니발 끼하노, 엔리크 두셀, 월터 D. 미뇰로 등이 중심이 되어 포스트 콜로니얼리즘과 세계체제론이 유럽중심주의적인 시각에서 벗어나지 못했다고 주장했다. 그들은 대안으로 ‘권력의 식민성’, ‘트랜스 모더니티’, ‘변경사유’ 등을 주장하였다. 이 그룹의 문제제기와 연구성과와 활동은 포스트 모더니즘과 포스트 콜로니얼리즘같은 서유럽에서 수입된 학문체계에 내재된 유럽중심주의적 사고를 비판하고 새로운 대안을 모색해나가는 도움이 된다.
라몽 그로스포구엘은 이 연구 그룹의 이론을 미국의 자치령인 푸에르토리코에 적용하여 분석하였다. 월러스틴과 포스트 콜로니얼리즘 이론 모두를 비판하면서 인종적/민족적 하위 주체관점에서 “급진적, 보편적, 탈식민적, 반자본주의적 다양성”을 향해 나아가는 새로운 급진적 탈식민적 비판관점을 세워, ‘비판적 세계시민주의(a critical cosmompolitanism)'로 나아가고자 하였다. 그는 끼하노의 ‘권력의 식민성’ 이론과 부르디외의 ‘상징적 자본’ 이론을 미국자치령인 푸에르토리코에 적용해서 사용하였다. 그는 미국의 지구적 차원의 ‘상징적 자본전략’은 타이완이나 한국같은 동아시아의 기적을 설명하는 좋은 이론적 도구가 될 수 있다고 생각했다. 라틴아메리카 연구자인 안태환은 그로스포구엘이 제기한 ‘비판적 세계시민주의’는 관념적이고, 포스트 콜로니얼리즘을 비판하지만 여전히 그 범주에서 완전히 벗어나지 못했다는 점에서 한계를 안고 있다고 비판하였다.
한국서양사학계에서 유럽중심주의 세계사에 대한 비판적 연구가 시작된 것은 최근이다. 1990년대에 세계체제론 연구로 그 물꼬가 트이기 시작했고, 2000년대 초부터 개별적 연구가 진행되기 시작하다가, 2006년 한국서양사학회 유럽중심주의 세계사 학술대회를 전후로 하여 급속도로 활성화되었다. 이후 세계사에 대한 많은 학술대회, 연구, 번역, 그리고 관련 기관들이 세워지기 시작했다. 그러나 유럽중심주의 세계사에 대한 비판이 한계가 있다는 반비판도 새롭게 제기되고 있다. 한국서양사학계는 이러한 반비판을 염두에 두면서 한국적 상황에 맞는 새로운 세계사를 정립해나갈 수 있도록 지속적인 공동노력을 기울여야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper analysed criticism and recriticism on Eurocentric history of world mainly since 2000. This paper treats with two parts about A.G. Frank's Reorient and 'Modernity/ Colonial research Group in Latin America'.
A. G. Frank had tried to make his own perspective of 'the global history,' criticizing the eurocentric interpretation of I. Wallerstein. He had suggested his new these that the world economy and the world system were not formed around Europe but Europe joined lately the exiting the world economy and the world system. Frank insisted that this euro-centric views of Marxism was "Orientalism painted red", depending on Teshale Tibebu.
In 1998 Frank had published Reorient that analyzed the world economy between 1400 and 1800. First, he urged that the core of world economy between 1400 and 1800 was not Europe but Asia, especially China. Second, he thought that Europe could rise as a new center of the world economy because Europe had the advantage of "backwardness" afforded by their position at the (semi-)periphery of the world economy. Third, he paid attention to the economic revival in and world impact of East Asia(Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore) and forecast that "the West and the East will again trade places in the global economy and in world society."Frank's new approach to these "global world history" may be a great step to overcome the existing euro-centric world history. But there are several obstacles for Frank's the global world history to be an alternative. First, he neglects concrete researches on certain important time and region or country, emphasizing too much "the holistic and universal global history." Second, he tends not to pay enough attention to the internal historical mechanisms and differences of certain regions and certain countries, stressing on the external relation and the globally horizontal connection between parts and parts of world. Third, it is a reflection of the existing Eurocentric interpretation of East Asia for Frank to see East Asia focusing on only China and Europe which have a direct trade relation with Europe.
'Decolonial Group' such as E. Dussel, Anibal Quijano, and Walter D. Mignolo has criticized 'dependency theory', 'theory of world system', 'post-modernism,' and 'post-colonialism.' R. Grosfoguel, one of 'Decolonial Group', has introduced Decolonial Group's theory into the U.S.A. and has tried to synthesize it and add new elements to it. Grosfoguel's prospect is meaningful and important, because it criticizes severely the Eurocentric perspective and tries to suggest the alternative.
Grosfoguel criticizes both post-coloniality and theory of world system and suggests hetearchies/coloniality/subaltern knowledge as the alternative. Postcolonial scholars emphasizes colonial culture and agency. Grosfoguel criticizes that world system theorists have difficulties theorizing culture, whereas post-colonial theorists have difficulties conceptualizing political process. Both fluctuate between the dangers of economic reductionism and of culturalism. In order to overcome danger of economic reductionism and culturalism, he emphasizes the importance of 'heterarchies', 'coloniality of power', and 'subaltern knowledge'.
