America's highest honor for children's books, the John Newbery medal was established in 1922, and claims to be the first children's book prize in the world. In its long history, there are numerous outstanding books which have a strong influence on children and children's literature.
Almost 50 years after Madeleine L'Engle's classic children's book A Wrinkle in Time(1962) won the Newbery medal, the prestigious American prize was won by a novel in which A Wrinkle in Time plays an important role. Rebecca Stead's When You Reach Me(2009) tells the story of a twelve-year-old New Yorker Miranda, caught up in reading L'Engle's time-and-space-travelling tale. Miranda begins to receive notes that she believes are from the future and which could help prevent a tragic death.
In this paper, I will discuss three issues. First, I will describe how time travel and ʻʻtesseractʼʼ work in the story of A Wrinkle in Time. It is essential to understand the effective use of first-person narration by the main character Miranda in When You Reach Me. Secondly, I will examine how A Wrinkle in Time is incorporated in the story of When You Reach Me. The classic novel is vital both to the progression of the mystery in the latter and development of each character. Thirdly, I will consider intertextuality and the New York City setting of When You Reach Me. I firmly believe that Newbery award books are highly significant in the world of childrenʼs literature in the United States.
