초록

근대에서 ‘실패한 삶’이란 심각한 금기사항으로서, 근대화 이후 개인의 몰락이라는 말은 생업과 물질적 자산의 손실 그리고 사회적 지위의 상실과 동일시되었다. 근대적 삶의 질과 속도에 순응하지 못한 이러한 패배의 삶은 개인에게 운명적으로 부과되는 것이 아니라 당대의 역사·경제·문화에 의해 규정되는 사회적 구성물이다. 2001년 독일에서 발표된, 베를린 술집 종업원을 다룬 스벤 레게너 Sven Regener의 데뷔작 『레만 씨 Herr Lehmann』 는 80년대 브레멘을 떠나 아직은 동서로 분리되어있던 베를린이라는 대도시로 무작정 상경하여 도시를 떠도는 ‘뜨내기’의 일상을 다룬 소설이다. 이 글에서는 작품 『레만 씨』의 동명 주인공에서 나타나는 ‘더딘 성장 postadolescence’의 문제에 초점을 맞추어 이를 서구 근대화 이후 문학에서 나타나는 패자적 주인공의 전형 ‘오블로모프 Oblomov’의 관점에서 다루고자 하였다. 레게너 소설의 원 텍스트인 곤차로프 Ivan A. Goncharov의 『오블로모프 Oblomov』(1859)는 자본주의 경제체제가 성장하면서 몰락에 내몰린 지주계급의 무기력한 행보(行步)와 심리를 전형적으로 보여주는 작품이다. 반면 『레만 씨』는 전후 경제발전으로 풍요로운 물질문명을 이룬 구 서독사회가 통일 직전 다다른, 더 이상 아무 것도 꿈꾸지 않는 소시민적 정체(停滯)의 실존을 반영한다. 소설은 평이한 문체와 이야기 구성으로 텍스트 차원에서는 단순한 구조를 드러내고 있지만, 콘텍스트 차원에서는 의미 있는 문제의식과 다양한 담론을 가능케 하는데, 이는 소설의 시공간이 독일사회의 특수한 정치적 문화적 역사적 문맥에 놓여있기 때문이다. 이 소설의 시간적 공간적 배경은 베를린 장벽 붕괴 직전인 1989년 옛 서베를린의 변방 ‘크로이츠베르크’이다. ‘번듯한’ 직업을 갖지 못한 젊은이가 소설의 반주인공 antihero으로 등장하고, 이야기가 과거 ‘68운동의 대안공간이자 인종적, 계층적으로 혼합된 소위 ‘소셜 믹스’지역에서 전개되며, 소설 마지막에 1989년 독일의 통일이라는 역사적 사건을 끌어들이고 있다.

Oscar Wilde's word, "the purpose of art is to describe the beauty of failure” finds its literary expression in the novel Herr Lehmann (2001) of Sven Regener. In the modern society the failure is considered as a serious taboo and it has been equated with the loss of gainful employment and material possession as well as the status loss in the public. But the failure in life can not be defined as a fateful element of human being, but as a historically, culturally, socially caused construct. Herr Lehmann is a novel, which tells history of men in Berlin, whose lives do not meet the requirements of the society. The novel shows almost Mr. Lehmann's everyday life in the period leading up to the german historical turnaround of the year 1989 (Wende): bartending, hanging out with friends, falling in love, and drinking. The novel ends with the fall of Berlin Wall. When the fall of the Wall is televised, he goes out to join the crowd. It is his thirtieth birthday.
This article analyzes Sven Regeners Herr Lehmann in the context of belated coming of age (postadolescence). The article treats the protagonist, Mr. Lehmann as 'antihero' regarding the typical literary character of the loser who appears from Western modernization, 'Oblomov', the novel person of russian writer Ivan A. Goncharov. The later is a work which shows an typically enervated attitude and the psychology of the russian landed class, which was placed in fate of ruin with the growth of capitalist economy in 19th century. Whereas the former reflects the standstill of the West Germany society before the fall of the Wall, which has already accomplished a abundant material civilization with economic development after 1945.
It is remarkable that the text on the one hand offers so simple, easily to be read stories, but on the other hand it enables reader to join in a meaningful discussion about the complicated social issues, because the time and space of the novel is put in the specific 'macroscopic' german political historical 'context': the West Berlin's alternative society of '68 Movement (Kreuzberg) or the historical turnaround '89 of german nation (Wende) etc. At the final scene of the novel narrative Mr. Lehmann's belated coming-of-age story coincides with the fall of the Wall. The 'postadolescence' of the Mr. Lehmann can be construed as a literary device which suggests that the german historical reunification could turn slowly and afterwards into the memory politics.
