초록

The political philosophy represented in Angels in America is summarized as both criticizing Reagan government and acknowledging identity of homosexuals. However, it can be expanded as exploring people’s inward attitude about the troubles of life. The main characters of Angels in America emphasize that impending pains of life are not to be feared but utilized as opportunities for the better future. Angels in America criticizes not only the irrational aspects of American society of 1980s but also those of contemporary American society. In addition, it helps to consider diverse aspects of contemporary other societies including Korean society.
Basically, Angels in America gives a vivid picture of discrimination, oppression, exclusion against homosexuals, who are regarded as AIDS patients or potential AIDS patients. Naturally, they should be considered members of the society for the purpose of accomplishing social integration in a society, but they are excluded by some politicians who sacrifice homosexuals for their political goals and intentionally create an atmosphere of terror of AIDS.
To sum up, ‘discrimination’ and ‘exclusion’ are two basic governing principles in Reagan government. It seems that the Reagan era is over, but it has still effects on the present-day America. It also has set a bad example for other nations as well. Therefore, we need to study Angels in America diachronically and synchronically to look back upon the past, look into the present, and have an eye to the future.
