탈/냉전기 미국주의의 굴절과 영화표상 (Refraction of Americanism and Cinematic Representation in the Post-Cold War Era)

초록

이 논문은 탈/냉전의 기류가 감지되기 시작하던 시기에 남한의 대중들이 미국에 대해 가졌던 감정이나 정서를 추적하기 위해 씌어졌다. 1980년대 중반에서 1990년대 초반에 이르는 시기의 한국영화에는 미국을 바라보는 대중 인식의 심상치 않은 변화를 짐작케 하는 영화적 서사와 시각적 요소들이 출현하게 된다. 이러한 영화들은 미군정에서 한국전쟁, 근대사에 이르는 냉전의 기억들을 환기시키는 동시에 탈냉전의 변화된 분위기 안에서 독해될 여지를 품고 있다.
이 글은 남한의 대중들이 미국에 대한 어떤 태도와 감정을 공유하고 있었으며 그에 상응하는 내면의 드라마는 어떠한 것이었는가?, 라는 질문을 던지고, 그에 답하기 위해 크게 두 가지 경향의 영화들에 주목한다. 기지촌이나 미국을 배경으로 ‘아메리칸 드림’의 양상을 전면화한 영화들이한 축을 이룬다면, 베트남전을 통해 한국전쟁과 한미 관계에 대해 성찰하는 영화들이 다른 한 축을 형성한다. 어느 쪽이든 간에, ‘미국’ 혹은 ‘미국인’이라는 존재와 대면하고 그에 대한 비판적 시선을 대중서사로 육화시키려 했다는 점에서 이들 영화들은 주목할 만한 가치가 있다. 논의의 과정에서 문제화한 것은 가족의 부재로 인한 불행한 성장에 대한 기억의 서사화, 추악한 미국인에 대한 표상, 미국인을 향한 한국인의 폭력적 복수,이태원이라는 기지촌 공간, 미국화된 스펙터클, 아메리칸 드림의 내면화문제, 한국인의 자기 처벌 등의 사안이다.
영화들의 대부분이 미국에 대한 적대의식을 표명하고 있지만 좀더 문제적인 것은 한국전쟁 미체험 세대가 ‘미국’을 바라보는 시선이 갖는 이중성 내지 분열의 양상이다. 미국에 대한 적대와 선망이 동시에 표출되는한국인의 내면 풍경을 비판적으로 담아내기 시작했다는 점은 이 시기 영화들을 단순한 반-미국주의 영화들과 구분짓게 만든다. 그것은 원조자이면서 가해자이기도 했던 한국 내의 미국의 위상을 성찰하는 것이면서, 이상과 현실의 낙차를 보인 미국주의에 대해 사유하는 행위이다. 더 나아가그것은 미국의 이상을 보편적 선으로 추종하면서 닮고자 했던 한국의 역사를 비판적으로 반추함과 동시에, 오랜 냉전기 동안 미국에 대한 환상뒤에 애써 가리고 있던 전쟁과 분단의 아픔을 끌어내고, 그에 대한 우리의 책임을 묻기 시작한 한국영화의 첫 시도라는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This paper was written to trace back the South Korean emotion or sentiment towards the US during the time when the atmosphere of the post-Cold War era was first being observed. South Korean cinema produced during the mid-1980s through the early 1990s witnessed the rise of cinematic narratives and visual factors which may imply an unusual change in the Korean popular recognition of America. These films not only recalled the memory of the Cold War starting from the US Army Military Government in Korea, the Korean War and up to modern history, but also have demonstrated high chances of being interpreted within a changed atmosphere due to the end of the Cold War.
This paper aims to search for a shared South Korean attitude and sentiment towards the United States, and questions the internal drama corresponding to such sentiment. In order to come up with an answer to my research question, I have largely focused on films with two types of tendencies. If there is one axis of cinema which paints the overall aspectsof the American Dream using the military camp town or the US as a background, other films attempt to reflect on Korean-American relations and the Korean War through the lens of the Vietnam War. Be it the former or the latter, focusing on the fact that these films have confronted the existence of America or Americans and attempted to materialize the critical perspectives in this regard, these films are worthy of paying attention. Particular points that I have tried to make in the discussion includes the narrativization of memory regarding the unfortunate growth due to the absence of a family, the representation of ugly Americans, the violent revenge of Koreans towards the Americans, Itaewon as a space of military campsidetown. , Americanized spectacles, and the internalization problem of the American Dream, the self-punishment of Koreans.
Most of the films express antagonism towards America, however, what becomes more problematic is that the generation which did not experience the Korean War shows duplicity or possibly a split mind in their view of America. The fact that Korean films have started to critically reflect the inner side of the Koreans which contain the antagonism as wellas the envy towards America clearly make films produced in this time period different from simple Anti-American films. This is an action which not only reflects the status of the US in Korea which was both a supporter and an assaulter at the same time, but also reasons Americanism which showed a discrepancy between the ideals and reality.
Furthermore, such action critically reflects the Korean history which made strong efforts to resemble and pursue the ideals of America as a universal good. At the same time, it is also meaningful considering the fact that it brought about the pain of separation and war which were largely hidden by the American fantasy during the prolonged Cold War period. It is also a significant step forward in Korean cinema which began to ques tion the responsibility about such action.
