예술 동호회의 정치: 사적이면서 동시에 공적인 주체화의 무대 (The Politics of Art Clubs: The staging of political subjects in both private and public way)

초록

자발적 결사체로서의 예술 동호회는 공공성이라는 견지에서 보자면 사뭇 회의적인 시선으로 평가되어 왔다. 아렌트는 노동 사회의 지배력 확장과 그에 상응하는 고통으로부터의 회피 욕구가 '작은 행복'에의 추구로 나타난다고 보았다. 이러한 관점에 따르자면 예술 동호회는 노동사회의 지배력 아래에서 취미 활동으로 축소된 예술과 파괴된 공공성의 증거로 볼 수 있는 것이다. 그러나 노동 시간을 뺀 나머지의 여가 시간으로 예술 동호회 활동을 정의하는 것은 그 시간 내부의 질적이고 관계적 차원을 간과한다. 로버트 퍼트남은 예술 동호회 활동이 사회자본과 시민적 참여를 활성화시키는 민주주의의 학교 역할을 할 수 있다고 보았다. 이러한 관점은 일견 사적으로 보이는 예술 동호회 활동에 내재하는 정치적 함의를 사회학적으로 분석하고 포착하고 있다. 그러나 이는 정치적인 것을 사회적인 것의 사후 효과로 파악하면서 예술적인 것 고유의 정치적 주체화와 공공성 형성 과정을 간과한다. 본 논문은 자크 랑시에르의 논의에 기대어 경험적 사례를 분석하면서 예술 동호회의 정치적 가능성을 모색한다. 본 논문은 특히 예술적인 것 내부의 모순, 즉 구별과 위계를 작동시키는 문화 자본적 속성과 구별과 위계를 철폐하는 놀이적 속성의 충돌에 주목하면서, 예술 동호회가 사적 활동인 동시에 사회체의 치안적 질서에 자율적 공간, 해방적 감각, 평등적 관계를 침입시키는 정치를 작동시킬 수 있다고 본다. 예술 동호회가 구성하는 정치와 공공성은 합리적 이성과 도덕적 사회관계에 근거하지 않는다. 그것은 사회체의 법과 규범과 규칙에 반하는 자유로운 놀이의 무대를 이견적 공론장으로 출현시킨다. 하지만 예술 동호회의 정치는 자동적으로 보증되는 것이 아니라는 점을 본 논문은 사례들을 통해 강조한다. 예술 동호회의 정치는 놀이를 방해하고 파괴하는 힘, 놀이 안에 예술의 신화적 권위와 경제적 교환가치를 주입하려는 힘에 맞서는 또 다른 힘으로, 예속화의 힘에 맞서는 주체화의 의지와 역량으로 스스로를 드러낸다.

영어초록

The art clubs as voluntary associations have been negatively recognized from the perspective of the public given that they were seen as private activities. According to Arendt, the pursuit of "petit bonheur" is the evidence of the domination of the labor society and, accordingly, the increasing desire of escaping the pain of labor. In other words, the art clubs can been seen as artistic activities diminished to hobbies which proves the destruction of the public under the pressure of labor activities. However, this definition of art clubs as the remainder of labor activities neglects the qualitative and relational aspect inherent within the time where art club activities are produced. Robert Putnam argues that the art club activities can prompt social capital and civic engagement functioning as a school of democracy. This grasps sociologically the political and public connotation inherent in the art club activities, which look private on the surface. However, this perspective, seeing the political as ex post facto effect of the social, sets aside the unique aspect of the artistic in relation with the construction of political subjects and the public. This paper examines the political potency of the art clubs by investigating a few cases drawing on the argument of the aesthetics by Jacques Rancière. This paper looks at the contradiction inherent in the artistic, that is the contradiction between the operation of the cultural capital that strengthens the distinction and hierarchy and the operation of the playful nature that abolishing the distinction and hierarchy. Within this contradiction, the art clubs, if private, can activate the politics that superimpose the autonomous space, emancipatory sense, and equal relations onto the dominant order of the society. The politics and the public that the art clubs construct are not based on the rationality and morality. Rather, they stage free play against the law and norms of the social bodies. However, this does not simply mean that the politics of art clubs is not automatically ensured in the all activities of art club. The politics of art clubs reveal its potency as the will and capability of political subjectification, which always compete against another potency that hampers and destroys the play and that inculcates artistic authority and economic value in the play.
