르네상스 인문학자 기욤 뷔데의 문학의 ‘공적 유용성’에 대한 관점 연구 (Guillaume Budé’s perspective on the utility of literature)

초록

문학이 제공하는 ‘박식한 지식’이 없이는 세상이 폭력적일 수밖에 없고, 종교적 폐쇄성에 갇힌 파편화된 학문연구는 보편적이고 총체적인 지식의 전달에 실패한다고 파악하는 기욤 뷔데(Guillaume Budé)에게서 문학의 기능은 현실의 표면적 진실을 발견하거나 개인적 기쁨을 얻는 차원에 국한되지 않는다. 그에 따르면 언어의 아름다움 이면에 정신의 아름다움인 지혜를 담고 있는 문학은 신의 지혜와 메시지에 담긴 조화로움을 발견하도록 이끄는 역할을 한다. 인간에게 감춰진 진실과 최고의 선이 지닌 본질에 접근하도록 허용함으로써 인간성을 닦아주고 조화롭게 만드는 기능을 지닌 문학의 지혜는 그리하여 사회 구성원 사이의 결합과 조화를 형성하는데 기여한다는 차원에서 사회적 의미 역시 내포하고 있다. 특히 문화의 융성을 이룩한 지혜와 언어의 웅변성을 담고 있는 고대문헌에 대한 교육은 정치체제의 안정과 조화를 실현할 수 있는 정신적 자양분을 제공하는 역할을 담당할 수 있다. 정치의 궁극적 목적이 질서에 기반을 둔 조화로운 사회의 건설에 있다면, 그리고 이를 통해 문화의 발전을 꾀하는 데 있다면, 문학은 정치적 이상의 실현을 촉진시킬 지혜와 언어를 전달하는 역할을 수행해야 하며, 정치는 문학을 보호할 의무가 있다는 것이 뷔데의 관점이다. 이렇듯 지혜를 전달하는 언어와 지식을 통해 개화된 문화의 토대를 건축함으로써 정치체제의 안정을 기도하고, 그 영광을 후세가 기억하게 만들 수 있는 문학의 유용성에 대한 뷔데의 주장은 개인적 기쁨을 넘어 사회 구성과 정치 발달, 그리고 문화의 현양이라는 기능을 담당하는 문학의 사회적 가치에 대한 변호라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Guillaume Budé, an author representative of the French Renaissance humanists who acted for the revival of the humanities, held it a prime necessity to study literature in order to preserve, protect and complete our human nature. Because he believed that without the “erudition” provided by literature, the world could only be violent and humans could easily fall back to animal-hood. He thought that academic studies fragmented and confined by religious constraints as they were, had failed to deliver a holistic and universal knowledge, and stressed upon the fact that the functions of literature were not limited to mere pleasure and superficial truths. Literature, he said, encloses the wisdom enabling us to perceive the beauty of the mind within the beauty of language, and therefore its role is to help us discover God’s beauty and harmony. Thus if it is something that constitutes an early stage of knowledge, imperfect and imprecise, which fails to deliver the wisdom needed to maintain the equilibrium of life, then it is not to be considered as literature.
For Guillaume Budé, the utility of literature is first to be found in its capacity to create harmony and to put forward the best in men by allowing them to access their true nature and virtue. Furthermore such a capacity has also to do with the role of literature within society since the wisdom of literature helps constituting union and harmony between the members of the society.
In order to make possible the birth of a great political leader through the study of literature, examples of great rulers from ancient texts should be passed over to the future generations. In this respect, politics need to protect literature, and humanists have the duty to present models of social harmony to the political powers.
Thus what Guillaume Budé advocated was an attempt to reach a stable political system, by founding a civilized culture upon a wisdom acquired through language and knowledge; in this context the utility of literature is such that it can help future generations remember and learn from the past. His view can also be seen as a defense of the social value of literature, helping to promote culture, to structure the society and to develop politics. According to him, literature is an assets available to all and which must be acknowledged by all those who enjoy culture.
