노동의 기억과 공립석탄박물관의 공적 재현에 관한 연구 (A Study on Labor Memory and Public Representation of the Public Coal Museum)

초록

이 연구는 국내의 대표적인 ‘공립석탄박물관’을 현장 연구하여 노동의 기억에 대한 공적 재현 양상을 분석하였다. 이미지의 사회학적 분석이라는 방법으로 ‘낭만화’와 ‘대상화’라는 개념을 활용하였고 사례분석의 관점에서 각 박물관의 시설과 체험 프로그램을 분석하였다. 공립석탄박물관은 한국 사회가 공적으로 과거 산업화 시대의 기억을 어떻게 해석하고 재현하는지를 판단할 수 있는 의미 있는 공간이다. 박물관은 특정 주제에 따라 제반의 물리적 요소와 전시 및 재현물을 통해 수집, 전시, 교육을 하는 공공성을 지닌다. 더욱이 ‘공립’이라고 하면 공공 재원 투입을 통한 공공 가치의 실현을 그 목적으로 한다. 이러한 사회적 약속에 따라 관람객은 공립박물관의 전시와 재현에 대해 높은 수준의 기대와 신뢰를 갖는다. 연구 결과 세 군데 박물관의 ‘석탄’ 산업 및 그와 관련된 기억과 재현은 주로 ‘지역관광’의 소재로 활용되었다. 다양하고 복잡한 기억들이 ‘낭만화 된 가난’과 ‘대상화 된 노동’으로 재현되었으며 결과적으로 ‘지역관광 활성화’ 자원으로 축소되었다. 이 연구는 이를 비판적으로 분석하고 개선 방향을 모색하였다. 세 군데 공립석탄박물관은 기본적인 물리적 공간과 최소한의 필수 인력 그리고 설립 이후 20여 년 동안의 다양한 경험과 약간의 시행착오 등 중요한 경험 자산을 갖고 있다. 그러나 해당 지역의 삶의 기억 특히 노동의 기억과 연관하여 충분한 자료 확보와 당대적 의미를 충실히 살린 문화적 재현을 해내고 있다고 판단하기는 어렵다. 무엇보다 관광 활성화 차원에서 전시와 재현이 집중되어 해당 지역의 역사와 노동의 기억이 희석되는 경우도 있으며 그 문화적 재현물이 해당 지역의 일상과 노동을 낭만화하고 대상화하는 경향이 확인되었다. 앞으로 탄광지역의 석탄산업과 그 노동 및 일상의 기억들을 좀 더 복합적이고 다층적인 관점에서 해석한다면 세 군데 공립석탄박물관은 해당 지역의 역사와 노동의 기억을 온전히 담아내는 의미 있는 공간으로 기능할 것이다.

영어초록

This study personally visited the representative ‘public coal museum’ in Korea and analyzed the public representation of labor memory. The concepts of ‘romanticization’ and ‘objectification’ were used as a method of sociological analysis of images, and each museum’s facilities and experience programs were analyzed from the point of view of case analysis.
The ‘public coal museum’ is a meaningful space where we can judge how Korean society publicly interprets and reproduces the memories of the past industrialization era. Museums have publicity in charge of collection, exhibition, and education of a specific theme through all physical elements, exhibitions, and reproductions. Moreover, when it comes to ‘public’, its purpose is to realize public values through the input of public funds. According to this social promise, visitors have a high level of expectations and trust in public museum exhibitions and representations.
As a result of the study, the ‘coal’ industry in the three museums and related memories and representations were mainly used as materials for ‘regional tourism’. Various and complex memories of the industrialization era were represented as ‘romanticized poverty’ and ‘objectified labor’, and as a result, they were reduced to a resource for ‘vitalization of local tourism’. This study critically analyzed this and sought the direction of improvement.
The three public coal museums have important experience assets, such as basic physical space, minimum required manpower, various experiences over the past 20 years since their establishment, and some trial and error. However, it is difficult to judge that it has secured enough data and faithfully reproduced the culture in relation to the memory of life in the region, especially the memory of labor. Above all, in the process of concentrating exhibitions and representations for tourism activation, there are cases in which the memory of the history and labor of the region is diluted, and the cultural reproductions tend to romanticize and objectify the daily life and labor of the region. In the future, if the coal industry in the coal mining area and its labor and daily memories are interpreted from a more complex and multi-layered perspective, the three public coal museums will function as meaningful spaces that fully contain the history and labor memories of the region.
