곰의 변환과 결합에 관한 상징적 의미에 관하여 (A Study on the Symbolic Meanings on Self-transformation and Unification of Bear)

초록

이 글은 인간과 동물이 혼인이라는 관념을 통해서 결합하여 신성한 존재로 변형되거나 신성한 아들을 출산함으로써 존재변형을 성취한다는 신화적 내용에 주목하고 있다. 특히 동물 중에서도 곰의 상징성에 주목하면서 사냥의례에 관한 여러 문화적 흔적들과 설화들을 살펴볼 것이다. 곰과 관련한 흔적을 통해 ‘영혼’을 매개로 인간과 곰이 서로 합일한다는 내용적 보편성이 발견됨에 따라 인간의 조상이 곧 곰이라는 관념이 형성되었음을 알 수 있다.
다시 말해 인간의 조상은 곰의 힘과 특성을 소유하였으며, 인간은 이를 근거로 곰 신, 곰 왕의 관념을 갖추기에 이르게 된 것이다. 시베리아를 중심으로한 구석기문화에서 북유럽 게르만민족의 전통에 이르기까지 곰을 둘러싼 문화를 인류학과 신화학을 중심으로 여러 관점에서 접근함으로써, 곰과 인간의 존재변형과 그것이 지닌 개인적-공동체적 의미를 여러 각도에서 조망하고자 하였다. 또한, 이러한 작업을 통해서 단군 신화에 단편적으로 드러나는 곰과 관련한 신화소들이 지닌 문화적 의미를 보다 보편적으로 이해하고자 하였다.

영어초록

In ‘Ancient Chosun’ in the Heritage of the Three States, there are the two mythic themes as the transformation from bear into human and human-animal marriage occupying the only a small part of it but they have profound implications of mythological and religious aspects. At first, we have to pay sharp attention to the fact that activities for animal rituals specializing in bear in the paleolithic era have mainly been found in ‘cave’.
Affinity between man and bear based on morphological similarities in appearances could be enough to the second remarkable thing and the last could be involved in the concept of transformation from bear into human vice versa. Most of the cases of transformation are closely related to marriage between human and animal. As a matter of fact, man in ancient times tended to show dual attitudes to bears and it follows; bear as prey for feeding and as godly being to worship. Namely man in the paleolithic era regarded bear as a big game for survival and as a ghostly being for shamanic rituals at the same time. Therefore the notion of human-animal marriage, I construe, is a kind of an acceptable solution to the contradictory problem he faced, not least using a symbolic combination as a heterogeneous hybrid. Man as a result of the marriage between man and animal, is reincarnated in a newly enhanced form, equipped with experiential intelligence and brutal strength. ‘Bear’ in Dankun mythology is directly concerned with the notion of bear worship widespread in northern parts of the world and the tradition of mountain-gods(山神) in Korea. Assuming that bear-skulls were worshiped in the cave in the paleolithic era, shamanism must be a central function in forming the idea of animal transformation in consideration of symbolic meanings which bear contains. From a mythological approach on the basis of anthropological and historical research, my work aims at discovering symbolic meaning of bear and its rituals.
