곰나루 설화의 애니미즘적 성격과 지구생태시민주의 (A Study on Animistic Characteristics and Global Ecocitizenism in the Tale of ‘Gomnaru’)

초록

이 글은 충남 공주시에 전해오는 ‘곰나루’ 설화에서 한국 애니미즘의 성격을 궁구하고 그 현대적 의미를 지구생태시민주의와의 사상적 공통점에서 찾아보려는 시도이다. ‘곰나루’ 설화는 공주를 대표하는 이야기지만 현대인들에게 잘 이해되지 않는 측면이 있다. 그것은 두 가지 특이점 때문인데, 그 첫 번째는 인간과 동물의 종 질서가 역전되어 있다는 것이다. 중세 이후 지속된 인간중심주의는 인간을 모든 종의 지배자 혹은 관리자로 본다. 그런데 ‘곰나루’ 설화에서 남자는 짐승인 곰보다 강하지도 현명하지도 도덕적이지도 않다. 대신 곰과 사람은 서로 소통 가능한 공통 특성을 공유하고 있다. 이 공통 특성은 추상적이고 영적인 것인데, 이것은 부족기원설화의 곰 토템에서 발견되는 것과 같다. 두 번째 특이점은 남녀의 젠더 이미지가 역전되어 있다는 것이다. 암곰은 아름다움이나 덕성이 아니라 힘으로 남자를 제압하여 자신의 소유로 한다. 하지만 이 이야기는 여기서 그치지 않고 억류된 남자가 달아나게 함으로써 힘에 의한 지배라는 남성적 통제 원리 자체를 전복하고 부정한다. 그런데 모성성에 대해서는 조금 다른 시각이 발견된다. 가부장제 사회에서 모성성은 흔히 여성을 억압하는 기제로 작동하지만, 가족을 공동운명체로 인식하는 어머니는 약자인 아이들을 보호하는 최고의 방패이기도 하다. ‘선녀와 나무꾼’ 설화에서 아이들을 이용해 어머니를 억류하려는 나무꾼의 시도가 실패한 것처럼 한국의 설화는 모성성의 부정적인 면을 인식하면서도 모성성 그 자체는 긍정한다. ‘곰나루’ 설화에서도 남자가 아이들마저 외면하고 달아난 뒤, 아이들과 함께 남겨진 곰은 강물에 깃들어 신이 된다. 공주의 주민들은 어머니인 이 곰을 위해 수신제를 지낸다. 남자가 방기한 곰의 원정(冤情)에 대해 나루 근처 모든 사람들이 공동 책임을 진 것이다. 한국의 애니미즘은 모든 존재의 소통을 통해 억울하거나 외로운 존재가 없도록 해야 자연의 이치가 바로 잡히고 세상이 평화로워진다는 믿음을 바탕으로 한다. 이런 생각은 지구공동체 전 구성원들이 화합하여 병든 지구를 치유하여야 한다는 지구생태시민의 사상과 그 궤를 같이 한다.

영어초록

This article is an attempt to investigate the characteristics of Korean animism in the tale of ‘Gomnaru(Bear wharf)’ handed down in Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, and to find its modern meaning in the ideological similarity with global ecocitizenism. The tale of ‘Gomnaru’ is representative of the city of Gongju, but there are aspects that are not well understood by modern people. This is due to two singularities. The first is that the hierarchy of human and animal species is reversed. Anthropocentrism, which has persisted since the Middle Ages, sees humans as the rulers or managers of all species. However, in the tale of ‘Gomnaru’, men are neither stronger nor wiser or moral than the bear, the beast. Instead, bears and humans share a common trait that allow them to communicate with each other. These common traits are abstract and spiritual, such as those found in bear totems of tribal origin. The second singularity is that the gender images of men and women are reversed. A female bear subdues a man by force, not beauty or virtue, and makes it her own. However, this story does not stop there, and it overturns and denies the masculine order itself of domination by force by letting a man detained by a bear run away. However, there is a slightly different view of motherhood. In a patriarchal society, maternity often acts as a mechanism for oppressing women, but a mother who perceives the family as a common destiny is also the best shield to protect the weak children. Just as the woodcutter's failed attempt to detain the children's mother using children in the fairy tale ‘The Fairy and the Woodcutter’, Korean folktales affirm motherhood itself while recognizing the negative aspects of motherhood. In the tale of ‘Gomnaru’, after a man turns away from even the children and runs away, the bear left with the children dwells in the river and becomes a god. The residents of the Gongju City hold a ceremony for the mother, the bear. Everyone was held responsible for the sorrow of the bear that the man had turned away from. Animism in Korea is the belief that the principle of nature will be corrected and the world will be peaceful only when there is no unfair or lonely existence through communication of all beings. This idea is in line with global ecocitizenism that all members of the global community should unite to heal the sick earth.
