천룡산석굴과 골굴석굴의 건축 연구 (Architecture of Tianlongshan Grottoes and Golgul Grottoes)

초록

북제~당대에 이르기까지 2백 여년에 걸쳐 조성된 천룡산석굴은 아름다운 조각상으로 인해 널리 알려진 곳이지만, 우리에게는 1300여년 전 우리 선조들이 외국 땅에 조성한 조형작품이라는 점에서 각별한 곳이다. 기록에 전하는 물부순장군과 흑치상지의 딸 부부가 조성한 굴실은 2000년대 이전에는 21굴이라 여겨져 왔으나, 현재는 중국 학자들에 의해 제15굴이라는 주장이 제기되어 설득력을 얻고 있다. 조형사적으로는 물부순장군부부가 조성한 굴실을 특정하는 것이 중요하지만, 역사적으로는 백제유민인 이들 부부의 활약상을 파악할 수 있고, 勿部旬이라는 인물 및 물부라는 성씨의 존재에 대해 파악할 수 있는 자료가 전해진다는 점에서 매우 의미 있는 곳이다. 건축적으로 보면, 중국 석굴 중에서도 當代 목조건축이 잘 표현된 사례로서, 특히 굴실 정면에 처마와 공포 및 기둥으로 구성되는 바가 입체적으로 조각되어 있어 주목되고 있다. 특히 제16굴의 두공 하단 권살기법은 중국건축에서 처음 등장한 사례라는 점에서 의미가 있다.
골굴석굴은 초창시기가 불분명하지만 원효선사가 수행하였다는 穴寺에 해당한다는 설화가 전해지고 있어, <골굴마애불좌상>이 조성된 9세기 후반 이전에 조성되었을 것으로 보인다. 이 당시, 굴실 전면에 木造架構가 설치되었는지 여부는 알 수 없지만, 조선후기 여행기를 통해 억불숭유의 조선시대에 골굴석굴의 형태와 유지상황을 파악할 수 있다는 점에서 석굴사원 연구에 참고가 된다. 골굴석굴은 조선후기의 자료를 통해 천룡산석굴과 달리 목조가구가 암벽면에 가설되었던 것을 알 수 있다. 굴실의 표현은 시대와 장소에 따라 변화된 것으로 보이는데, 인도와 중국의 석굴을 고려해보면 목조가구가 가설되었을 것으로 추정해 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

Tianlongshan Grottoes, which was built over 200 years from the Bukje(北齊) period to the Tang Dynasty, is widely known for their beautiful sculptures. For us, it is a special place where our ancestors constructed grottoes in a foreign land more than 1,300 years ago. According to the records, the grottoes created by General Mulbusun and the daughter of Heukchi Sangji were considered to have 21 Gulsils(rooms) before the 2000s. However, currently, Chinese scholars claim that the number of the Gulsils was 15, which has been convincing. Tianlongshan Grottoes are very significant places: As for the formative history, it is meaningful to have identified Gulsil created by General Mulbusun and his wife. Historically, it is possible to grasp the performance of these couples who were Baekje refugees, and to understand the existence of the person named Mulbusun(勿 部 旬) and of the surname of Mullbu. Architecturally, among the Chinese stone caves, this is a good example of following a wood architecture style in that era. Eaves, Kongpoes, and pillars are carved on the front of the cave in three dimensions. Particularly, in the 16th cave, using the technique of Gwonsal in the lower part of Doogong is the first case in Chinese architecture.
Although the early stage of Golgul grottoes is not clear, it can be inferred that the grottoes were built before the late nineteenth century when Golgul Maaebul statue was created, as being a legend that Golgul grottoes were the place of prayer for Wonhyo. At that time, as recorded in some travels of the late Joseon Dynasty, it is not known whether or not a wooden structure was installed on the front of the caves, but we can found that in spite of the prevalent idea of oppressing Buddhism and respecting Confucianism during Joseon Dynasty, Golgul Grottoes were maintained, which is a useful reference to studying cave temples. As the trend of the late Joseon Dynasty, unlike Tianlongshan grottoes, it seems that wooden structure was built on a rock wall in Golgul Grottoes. The style of Gulsils seems to have changed according to the times and places. Considering the stone caves of India and China, it can be assumed that wooden structures were either embossed or created in Korea.
