The search for the identity of the Korean music, especially creative music, has been a topic of long standing in Korea's music history. Also the research continues for the refined music which may be both identified as uniquely Korean and universal in communicating with the general audience. Which, or what types of Korean music would be deemed Korean 'national' as well as 'global'?Gugak orchestral music, a new genre in Korea's both traditional and contemporary music, has emerged a promising musical medium to amalgamate the 'national' and 'global' qualities of the Korean music. Given the short history (fifty years) of Gugak orchestral music, a widely accepted analytic tool is yet to be identified as in the Western orchestral music.
Against this backdrop, this paper looks into the Gugak orchestral composition methodology with a view to identifying the above-mentioned qualities, focusing on the analysis of Kim hee-jo's Gugak orchestral piece <Ensemble No.1>. Kim hee-jo was a prolific composer, writing and publishing a wide variety of music including military band music, re-arrangement of folk songs, ensembles for Gugak and Western instruments, dance and film scores, music for Korean traditional voice and orchestra, Gugak orchestral music and Gugak ensemble. <Ensemble No.1> was nominated by the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts in 2009 as one of the few Gugak orchestral pieces published and performed between the 1950s and 2000s which survived the test of time.
The analysis concludes that while Kim hee-jo abided faithfully by the Gugak elements in his composition of <Ensemble No.1>, he appropriately used the orchestral structure and methodologies of the Western orchestral music. This may be the tool which allowed for the universal quality of this piece in communicating with the audience. However, while there are increasingly growing number of Gugak orchestral pieces written today utilizing this type of compromise, the accomplishment of a musical piece is judged not solely on the use of a specific composition methodology. As such, the key element in the success of Kim hee-jo's <Ensemble No.1> would be the composer's musical experience and insight which enabled him to combine various methodologies and heterogeneous musical elements and re-arrange them in his own language.
