칼빈 시편가 주제에 의한 ‘ 주성희의 피아노 변주곡’ 에 관한 연구 (Study of Variations on the Theme of Calvin’s Psalter by Joo Sung Hee)

초록

Calvin's clear grounds for church music comes from Bible, the Word of God. Due to the importance of lyrics, he insisted that praises of psalms are based on the idea 'Psalms are the true praises that God gave to us‘. In order to disseminate the idea, Genevan Psalter is being published from 1539 to 1562 by rhythmicalizing 150 psalms in French.
Calvin knew that church music was an important element for improving piety of church as well as for worship clauses. In addition, he insisted that it has to be with dignity for it is a song for the absolute God, as well as be concise for it is sung by congregations. It can be understood that Calvin realized his idea of church music through 『Calvin's Genevan Psalter』Publishing Korean edition of 『Calvin's Genevan Psalter』 in order to celebrate 500th birthday of Calvin, which is July 10, 2009, is considered to be an important matter on the point of Korean church history. I, too, think it is an honor and a overwhelming moment for the fact that I happened to participate in this work as a compilation committee.
When I was planning the theme of my 8th composition recital, I came up with piano variations on the Theme of Calvin's Psalter for celebrating 500th birthday of Calvin, in order to introduce 『Calvin's Genevan Psalter』that enabled realization of Calvin's idea of church music and to enable for congregations to easily learn Psalter through piano pieces.
Since Calvin's Psalter is new and unfamiliar for it is not widely known, I selected psalms that conform the following conditions. First of all, I selected the psalms that its lyrics are well-known. Secondly, I selected music tunes that have melodies and harmonies that can be easily combined to the Korean materials. Lastly, I selected music tunes that have melodies that can be easily being understood.
Purpose of this variations are as follows. First of all, I tried to thoroughly express mood of poetry. Secondly, materials for Korean music is being used for more than one music tune of each variations from the entire 6 pieces. Lastly, a full-bodied sound that is suitable for each mood of the music tune is being applied.
In addition, this piece can be considered as harmonization of music for 16th and 21th centuries, musical language for Korean and Western, as well as modes and chords through modern musical language.
As a result, I suggest various study of this matter to be continued, until our praises for God being widely sung by disciples of Christ, that is psalms, beautiful songs that God gave to us, are to be sung as praises of congregations at churches, 『Korean Psalter』is to be created, and eventually it is to be edited by being classified as Psalter for the future hymnbook.
Through this study, I hope that Calvin's idea of church music and Psalter based on the principle of Bible is to be newly understood by people today, and continuous study on the matter is to be accomplished.
