    초록

    The physical developmental theories of Yulgok and John Locke can be seen from the same context. Yulgok believed that while men's build cannot be changed, the mind, even the foolishness of it, can be changed. He saw that the purpose of physical education is to train and educate, founded upon the firm determination of the mind, and change one's disposition to become a sage. As to the content and methodology of the education, Yulgok urged the students to establish one's mind and focus on reading, but to never read any text that was not by a sage or not helpful, with occasional leisure time.
    The theory by John Locke is the means to educate a whole, well-rounded person and forms the basis of the physical, intellectual, moral and gentlemanly education. His natural discipline also led to the ideas of J. J. Rousseau. Furthermore, the proposition "a sound mind in a sound body" serves a great purpose in terms of the usefulness and potential of the physical education in building a human character. The modern society is structurally characterized by mechanization, automation and systemization, urging the pursuit of quantity-based value and convenience. This inevitably led to not only the loss of mental fortitude, weakened creativity but also the weakened physical faculties due to the limited physical activities and thereby the lack of balanced physical development. At this juncture where the society is witnessing the degradation of the confidence, balance and control, Locke's physical developmental theories cannot be more meaningful.
    Both Yulgok and Locke see the purpose of education in the breeding a whole, well-rounded person. This essence is captured and studied vehemently by their later generations. Yulgok's teachings had a far-reaching effect on various scholars of the late Joseon Dynasty. So did Locke, becoming a respected pioneer in modern education in the Western world.
    Comparing the theories of physical development by these renowned philosophers of the East and the West is an effective method to catch pearls of wisdom that are in need by today's physical educators. The two thinkers proposed the voluntary learning where students are self-motivated and develop interest, and this is what the Korean education needs to refer to in teaching the young. The forced learning should no longer have its place and be replaced by the ideal methodology of learning introduced by the two predecessors. To do that, physical education should serve as a central pillar of education. The Korean education will then have undoubted hope for a brighter future
