퇴계와 율곡 한시에 나타난 자연 공간과 자연물의 성격 (Characteristics of Natural Spaces and Objects in Toegye(退溪) and Yulgok(栗谷)’s Chinese Poems)

초록

이 논문은 퇴계와 율곡의 국문시가인 <도산십이곡>과 <고산고곡가>에 나타난 차이가 두 작가의 한시에서도 그대로 나타나는지 살펴본 글이다.
퇴계의 <도산십이곡>과 율곡의 <고산구곡가>에는 두 작가의 자연관과 인간관이 잘 드러나는데, 작품 속에 표현된 자연관과 인간관은 그들의 사상적 지향에 따라 다르게 나타난다. 퇴계가 자연의 보편적, 상징적, 불변적, 관념적 측면에 주목했던 것과 달리, 율곡은 구체적, 가변적, 실제적 측면에 주목했다. 또 퇴계가 자연에서 어떠한 이치나 이념을 확인하고자 하는 경향을 강하게 드러낸다면, 율곡은 거기에서 흥취를 느끼고 자연을 그 자체로 즐기고자 하는 경향을 강하게 드러낸다. 그리고 <도산십이곡>에서 퇴계가 자아를 향한 시선을 유지한다면서 자기 고백적 목소리로 노래한다면, <고산구곡가>에서 율곡은 타자에 대한 관심을 끊임없이 표현한다. 자연관과 인간관에서 나타나는 퇴계와 율곡의 이러한 차이는, 두 작가의 이기철학에서의 차이, 곧 퇴계가 본질적 존재인 ‘이(理)’와 그것의 발현인 ‘사단(四端)’를 중시하는 반면, 율곡은 ‘이(理)’뿐만 아니라 현상적 존재인 ‘기(氣)’와 그것의 발현인 ‘칠정(七情)’도 중시하는 입장에 서 있었던 데에서 기인한 것이다.
본고에서는 자연 공간과 자연물에 해당하는 것이면서 퇴계와 율곡의 한시에 공통적으로 나타나는 소재인 ‘달’, ‘물가’, ‘비’, ‘돌우물’과 ‘하늘’, ‘국화’와 ‘사계화’, ‘푸른 이끼’, ‘구름’, ‘호랑이’, ‘산’, ‘운암(雲巖)’을 중심으로 그것들을 표현한 두 작가의 한시를 비교해 보았다. 그 결과 그들의 국문시가인 <도산십이곡>과 <고산구곡가>에 나타난 차이는 두 작가의 한시에도 같거나 유사한 양상으로 나타난다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.
본고에서 살핀 작품들 가운데에는 한시에서의 차이점이 국문시가에서의 차이점과 같거나 유사한 양상으로 나타나는 사례들도 있었고, 국문시가의 경우와 다소 다르기는 하지만 한시에서의 차이점을 그들의 사상적 경향으로 설명할 수 있는 사례들도 있었다. ‘달’, ‘국화’와 ‘사계화(四季花)’, ‘산’, ‘비’, ‘돌우물’과 ‘하늘’, ‘푸른 이끼’, ‘운암(雲巖)’을 소재로 한 작품들이 전자에 해당한다면, ‘물가’, ‘구름’, ‘호랑이’를 소재로 한 작품들은 후자에 해당한다. 전자의 사례들은 물론이고 후자의 사례들도, 두 작가의 작품에 나타난 차이점을 그들의 사상적 경향으로 설명할 수 있다는 점에서 본다면, 국문시가에서의 차이점과 큰 틀에서는 일치한다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This thesis examines whether the differences in Toegye(退溪) and Yulgok(栗谷)’s Korean poems, Dosansibigok(陶山十二曲) and Gosangugokga(高山九曲歌), appear as they are in the two writers’ Chinese poems.
Toegye’s Dosansibigok and Yulgok’s Gosangugokga show the two artists’ views of nature and humans, and the views of nature and humans expressed in the work appear differently depending on their ideological orientation. First, speaking of their view on nature, Unlike Toegye, who focused on the universal, symbolic, unchanging, and ideal aspects of nature, Yulgok focused on the concrete, changeable, and practical aspects. In addition, while Toegye strongly showed a tendency to confirm some principle or ideology in nature, Yulgok strongly showed a tendency to feel interest in it and enjoy nature as it is. In addition, Dosansibigok and Gosangugokga also reflect Toegye and Yulgok’s perspectives on humans. In Dosansibigok, Toegye sings in a self-confessional voice while maintaining his gaze toward the self, while in Gosangugokga, Yulgok constantly expresses interest in others. This difference between Toegye and Yulgok in their views of nature and humanity is due to the difference in the ‘Yigi(理氣)’ philosophy of the two writers, that is, Toegye emphasizes ‘Yi(理)’, the essential being, and the ‘Sadan(四端)’, its manifestations, while Yulgok focuses on not only ‘Yi(異) but also ‘Gi(氣)’, a phenomenal being, and ‘Chiljeong(七情)’, its manifestations’.
In this paper, I examined the common materials of the Chinese poems of Toegye and Yulgok, which correspond to natural spaces and objects, such as ‘moon’, ‘waterside’, ‘rain’, ‘stone well’ and ‘sky’, ‘chrysanthemums’, ‘blue moss’, ‘clouds’, ‘tiger’, ‘mountain’, and ‘unam(雲巖)’. As a result, I was able to confirm that the differences that appeared in their Korean poems Dosansibigok and Gosangugokga appear in the Chinese poems of both authors in the same or similar aspects.
Among the works examined in this paper, there were cases where the differences in Chinese poetry were the same or similar to those in Korean poetry, and there were also cases where the differences in Chinese poetry could be explained by their ideological tendencies, although they were somewhat different from those in Korean poetry. If the works using the subjects of ‘moon’, ‘chrysanthemum’, ‘mountain’, ‘rain’, ‘stone well’ and ‘sky’, ‘blue moss’, and ‘unam(雲巖)’ belong to the former, then the works using the subjects of ‘waterside’, ‘clouds’, and ‘tiger’ belong to the latter. If we consider that the differences in the works of the two writers can be explained by their ideological tendencies, not to mention the former cases, but also the latter cases can be said to be largely consistent with the differences in Korean poetry.
