취승(醉僧)의 정체와 <취승곡(醉僧曲)>의 성격 (The Identity of Chuiseung and the Characteristics of Chuiseunggok)

초록

이 글은 이옥의 <가자 송실솔전>에 나오는 <취승곡>의 성격을 파악하고자 집필된 것이다. 이를 위해 취승의 정체를 파악하는 것을 우선적인 목표로 삼았다.
정현석의 『교방가요』 잡희 부분에 사당, 풍각, 초란, 산대, 곽독 등과 함께 기록된 것으로 보아 취승은 잡희의 일종임을 알 수 있다. 그리고 가사 <남아가>에 산대를 설치하고 펼치는 놀이 중에 취승이 포함된 것을 통해 취승이 산대희의 일종이라는 점, 취승이 만석중과 짝을 이루어 소개되고 있는 것을 통해 산대희에서 만석승희와 취승희가 한 세트로 존재했다는 점을 알 수 있다. 한편 1796년(정조 20년) 10월 16일 화성 성역의 완성을 축하하는 낙성연을 그린 채색화 <낙성연도>를 통해 만석승희는 만석중과 소매(기생)로, 취승희는 취승과 소매(기생)로 구성된 놀이임을 알 수 있다.
만석승희와 취승희가 한 세트로 존재하게 된 것은 이것이 원래는 연결되는 하나의 고사에서 유래한 놀이기 때문이다. 중국에서 송나라 이래 지속적으로 인기를 끈 이야기로서 고사, 잡극, 소설 등으로 다양하게 변주된 <도류취>라는 것이 있는데 이 영향을 받아 형성된 것이 만석승희와 취승희로 추정된다. <도류취>는 옥통선사가 류선교의 계략에 빠져 그가 보낸 기생에게 유혹되어 파계한 후 류선교의 딸 류취로 환생하여 방탕한 삶을 이어가자 옥통선사의 친구였던 월명화상이 류취를 제도하는 이야기다. 이 중 옥통선사가 기생에게 유혹되어 파계하는 과정을 그린 놀이가 만석승희이고, 월명화상이 옥통선사의 환생인 류취를 제도하는 과정을 그린 놀이가 취승희로 보인다.
이렇듯 만석승희와 취승희는 산대희의 일종으로 공연되었으나 시간이 지나면서 산대희에서 독립하여 별도의 산대놀이나 탈춤으로 발전해 갔으며, 이 과정에서 놀이의 성격도 종교극(불교도탈극)에서 오락극으로 전환된 것으로 보인다. 또한 취승 캐릭터의 이름도 취바리로 바뀌었는데 여기에는 다소 복잡한 사정이 개입된 것으로 파악된다. 취승은 원래 <도류취>의 월명화상을 형상화한 인물이다. 그런데 월명화상의 이미지가 신선도화극에 등장하는 철괴리의 이미지와 겹쳐지게 되면서 취승을 철괴리로 인식하는 현상이 나타났고 이 철괴리가 체과리 → 취과리 → 취바리로 와전된 것으로 보인다.
한편 <취승곡>은 명칭을 고려할 때 취승희에서 불린 노래라 생각하기 쉽지만, 노래의 내용을 고려하면 만석승희에서 불린 노래로 보는 것이 합리적이다. 만석승희에서 불린 노래를 <취승곡>이라 한 것은 만석승희와 취승희를 포괄하여 취승희로 통칭하는 관행이 존재했었기 때문이다. 물론 만석승희와 취승희를 포괄하여 만석승희로 통칭하는 관행도 함께 존재했는데, 이 때문에 일부 기록에서는 <취승곡>을 ‘만석중 노래’라고 부르는 것이 확인되고 있다.

영어초록

This study was designed to figure out the characteristics of Chuiseunggok in Lee Ok's Gaja Songsilsoljeon. For this purpose, the study set its first goal of examining the identity of Chuiseung.
Chuiseung is recorded along with Sadang, Punggak, Choran, Sandae, and Gwakdok in the Japhee part of Gyobanggayo by Jeong Hyeon-seok, which suggests that Chuiseung is a type of Japhee. The Gasa work Namaga includes Chuiseung in the group of games based on the installation of Sandae, which indicates that Chuiseung is a type of Sandaehee. There are also introductions that pair Chuiseung with Manseokjung, which indicates that Manseokseunghee and Chuiseunghee made a set in Sandaehee. The colored painting Nakseongyeondo, which depicts Nakseongyeon that commemorated the completion of the Hwaseong Fortress zone on October 16, 1796(the 20th year of King Jeongjo's reign), shows that Manseokseunghee consisted of Manseokjung and Somae(Gisaeng) and that Chuiseunghee consisted of Chuiseung and Somae(Gisaeng).
Manseokseunghee and Chuiseunghee made a set because they originated from an ancient event and were both connected to it. The ancient event is Doryuchui, which has enjoyed consistent popularity since Song Dynasty in China and had diverse variations, including ancient stories, Japgeuk, and novels. It is estimated that Manseokseunghee and Chuiseunghee were formed under its influence. Doryuchui tells the story of Oktongseonsa, who fell prey to Ryu Seon-gyo's scheme, was enticed by a Gisaeng sent by him, and renounced Buddhism. After his death, he was reincarnated into Ryu Chui, the daughter of Ryu Seong-gyo, and lived in wildlife. Wolmyeonghwasang, one of Oktongseonsa's friends, enlightened Ryu Chui and led her to nirvana. It seems that Manseokseunghee depicts the process of Oktongseonsa being enticed by a Gisaeng and renouncing Buddhism and that Chuiseunghee depicts the process of Wolmyeonghwasang leading Ryu Chui, who was the reincarnation of Oktongseonsa, to nirvana.
Manseokseunghee and Chuiseunghee were performed as a type of Sandaehee, but they got separated from Sandaehee over time and developed into separate Sandae play or mask dance. In this process, their nature was converted from religious drama(Buddhist transcendence drama) to entertainment drama. In addition, the name of the Chuiseung character was changed to Chuibari, which involved rather complicated circumstances. Chuiseung was originally a figure that embodied Wolmyeonghwasang in Doryuchui. The image of Wolmyeonghwasang got to overlap with that of Cheolgoiri in Sinseongdohwa play, which made people perceive Chuiseung as Cheolgoiri. Then a wrong chain action happened from Cheolgoiri through Chegwari and Chuigwari to Chuibari.
Given its name, it is easily estimated that Chuiseunggok was sung at Chuiseunghee, but it is more rational than it was sung at Manseokseunghee based on the content of the song. A song that was sung at Manseokseunghee was called Chuiseunggok because of the practice of designating both Manseokseunghee and Chuiseunghee as Chuiseunghee. There was, of course, a practice to designate both Manseokseunghee and Chuiseunghee as Manseokseunghee. There are thus some records in which Chuiseunggok was called the “Manseokjung Song.”
