초록

본고는 모토야 유키코의 소설 ｢이류혼인담(異類婚姻譚)｣ 속 부부의 모습을 통해 현대 일본 사회의 결혼관과 변화하는 성 역할에 대해 고찰한 것이다.
소설의 주인공은 결혼 4년차 전업주부이다. 결혼 초부터 남편은 집에서는 아무것도 하고 싶지 않다고 선언했다. 아이도 없는데다 대부분의 집안일을 가전제품이 대신해 준다고 생각하는 주인공은 주부로서의 자신의 삶이 너무 편하다고 느낀다. 본고에서는 전업주부에 대한 이러한 서술 태도가 같은 시기 한국에서 나온 『82년생 김지영』과 크게 대비되는 점을 환기시키는 동시에, 이것이 전업주부에 대한 남편의 동경과 그로 인한 갈등으로 이어지고 있음을 지적했다. 소설은 쌍둥이처럼 닮아가는 부부의 이야기를 통해 결혼이라는 제도 속에서 개인의 주체성을 어떻게 지킬 수 있을지를 묻는다. 전업주부가 되려는 남편의 모습은 아내와 맹목적으로 동화되려는 욕망으로 해석할 수 있다. 또한 치열한 경쟁과 불안한 고용으로 상처입고 방황하는 현대 남성들의 처지와 오버랩된다. 직장인도 전업주부도 될 수 없었던 남편은 결국 작약이 되어 산으로 갔다. 그에 반해 남편이 만든 안락한 세계에서 점점 자신을 잃어가던 아내는, 혼자가 된 후 자신의 몸이 자신만의 것이 되었음을 실감한다. 소설의 결말은 자신을 잃고 상대에게 맞추기만 하는 결혼생활은 지속될 수 없음을 말해준다. 한편 이 소설은 ‘동물신랑’이라는 이류신랑담의 전통을 깨고 식물신랑의 탄생을 보여주었다. 이 식물신랑 이미지에는 21세기 일본의 신(新) 남성상으로 대두된 ‘초식남(草食男)’ 현상이 투영되어 있다. ｢이류혼인담｣은 변화하는 성 역할과 결혼관 속에서 진정한 결혼의 의미, 가사와 일의 양립 문제, 이를 통한 결혼의 지속가능성에 대한 화두를 던지고 있다.

영어초록

This paper examines the portrayal of marital relationships in Motoya Yukiko’s novel “Heterogeneous-Marriage Story” to explore the attitudes towards marital views and changing gender roles in contemporary Japanese society.
The main character of the novel has been married for four years and is a housewife. From the beginning of their marriage, her husband declared that he didn’t want to do anything at home. She felt that her life as a housewife was too comfortable because she thought household appliances took care of most household chores, and she didn’t have any children. In this paper, while highlighting how such descriptive attitudes towards housewives sharply contrast with those depicted in 『Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982』, a novel from the same period in Korea, it is pointed out that this leads to conflicts stemming from husbands’ admiration for housewives. The novel questions how individual autonomy can be preserved within the institution of marriage through the story of a husband and wife who gradually come to resemble each other like twins. The sight of the husband aspiring to become a full-time househusband can be interpreted as a desire to blindly assimilate with his wife. Furthermore, the desire for full-time househusband overlaps with the plight of modern men who are scarred and adrift in fierce competition and precarious employment. The husband, unable to be either a breadwinner or a full-time househusband, ultimately becomes a peony and heads to the mountains. In contrast, the wife, who gradually lost herself in the comfortable world created by her husband, realizes after being alone that her body belongs only to herself. The ending of the novel suggests that a marriage where one loses oneself and merely conforms to the other cannot be sustained. On the other hand, this novel breaks the tradition of “animal husband” in the stories of non-human husbands, and introduces the concept of a “plant bhusband” The imagery of the “plant husband” reflects the phenomenon of the “herbivore man” that has emerged as a new masculinity in 21st-century Japan. “Heterogeneous-Marriage Story” raises questions about the true meaning of marriage within the changing gender roles and marital views, the issue of balancing household and work responsibilities, and the sustainability of marriage through these changes.
