泉谷 宋象賢에 대한 哀祭文 연구 (A study on Cheongok(泉谷), Song Sang-Hyun(宋象賢)'s Funeral Orations)

초록

본 연구는 故人을 애도하는 형식의 글인 ‘애제문’을 중심으로 임진왜란 당시 순절한 泉谷 宋象賢(1551∼1592)에 대해 당대 문인이나 후대인들은 어떠한 생각을 가지고 있었는지, 공적․사적인 애제문을 통해 국가와 개인은 어떻게 그를 위로하였는지, 또 그 속에서 문학은 어떠한 역할을 하였는가를 중심으로 살펴보았다.
송상현에게 내려진 9편의 사제문에는 殺身成仁, 義重恩輕, 端坐不動, 顔杲卿 등의 몇 개의 핵심 키워드를 지속적으로 중복, 변주한 것으로 보아 관념화된, 규범화된, 정형화된 節義의 표상으로 추숭하고 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 송상현 사후 200여 년 동안의 조선 사회에서 그가 취한 大義라는 가치를 높이 선양할 목적과 이유가 분명히 있었으며, 국가는 사제문을 통해 이를 적극 활용하였다고 볼 수 있다. 사제문과 달리 일반 애제문에서는 송상현의 죽음 자체를 애도하고 슬퍼하는 私情이 표출되었음을 알 수 있었다. 사제문은 표면적으로 애도를 내세우면서 국가가 지향하고자 하는 이념에 걸맞는 인물을 끊임없이 표상하여 추숭하는 한편 국가적 차원에서 백성의 눈물을 닦아주고 위무하였던 고도의 정치적 문학양식이었다고 할 수 있다. 애제문에서 고인을 잃은 상실감을 통곡, 한탄, 비탄, 부끄러움, 안타까움, 슬픔, 구차함 등의 다양한 감정으로 言表하였는데, 그것 자체로 ‘자기 위로와 치유’가 된다고 할 수 있다. 이렇게 쏟아내는 행위는 일종의 ‘카타르시스’가 되기 때문이다.
이러한 연구는 천곡 송상현을 이해하는 또 하나의 단서를 제공함과 동시에 조선시대 임진왜란의 상흔을 치유할 수 있는 하나의 방편으로서 문학의 기능에 주목하는 계기가 될 것으로 생각한다.

영어초록

Focusing on ‘funeral orations(애제문)’, which were written to mourn over the dead, this study investigated the thoughts of writers of the time or later generations about Cheongok Song Sang-Hyun(宋象賢, 1551∼1592), who died in defense of his loyalty during the Japanese invasion of Korea, the way the nation and individuals condoled over him through public and private funeral orations, and the role of literature in mourning. The discussion results are as follows.
First, seeing that the nine memorial service letters for Song Sang-Hyun(송상현) continuously repeated and applied variations to some key words, such as Salsinseongin(殺身成仁), Euijungeungyeong(義重恩輕), Danjwabudong(端坐不動), and Angogyeong(顔杲卿), it appears that he was worshiped as a symbol of ideated, normalized, and standardized fidelity. This implies that there were definite purpose and reason to highly enhance the great cause, pursued by him in the Joseon society for 200 years after his death, and it can be said that the nation actively adopted this through memorial service letters.
Second, it was revealed that unlike memorial service letters, normal funeral orations expressed personal feelings to mourn and grieve over Song Sang-Hyun’s death.
Third, memorial service letters were an advanced political form of literature to ceaselessly represent and worship a figure of man, who accorded with the ideology that the nation aimed at and to wipe away tears of the people and pacify at the state level, although outwardly, they expressed mourning.
Fourth, funeral orations stated a sense of loss after his death with a variety of emotions like wailing, lamentation, anguish, shame, regret, sorrow, andpatheticalness, and it is ‘self-consolation and healing’ itself. These acts of emotional expression were a kind of ‘catharsis’.
It is supposed that this study would provide another clue to the understanding of Cheongok Song Sang-Hyun and an opportunity to pay attention to the function of literature as one expedient to heal the car from the Japanese invasion of Korea in the Joseon Dynasty era.
