과거 관련 장전장후 고문서 연구 (A Study on some Paleographic Documents related with the State Examination System in Joseon Dynasty)

초록

이 논문은 조선시대의 소과와 문과, 그리고 소과‧문과의 한 단계에 가름하는 각종 시험과 관련된 몇 가지 고문서를 고문서학의 관점에서 고찰함으로써 과거시험의 실상과 과거 문화의 면면을 좀 더 구체적으로 살펴보고자 시도한 것이다.
과거 관련 고문서로는 官文書는 물론 私文書도 많이 작성되었을 터이지만, 오늘날 傳存되어 접할 수 있는 실물은 소수에 불과하다. 따라서 실제 고찰의 대상으로 삼은 문서는 대개 실물이 있거나, 문헌상에 문서식이 실려 있는 것에 한하였다.
본고에서 고찰한 고문서는 다음과 같다. 과장 입장 전의 문서로는 設科知委帖, 照訖帖, 四祖單子, 錄名單子, 改名證憑 立旨, 陳試狀 등이고, 과장 퇴장 후의 문서로는 白牌‧紅牌, 六行單子, 別給文記 등이다. 과장 중의 문서로는 試券, 講紙 등이 있으나, 이는 필자가 학위논문에서 이미 다룬 바 있으므로 본고에서는 고찰 대상에서 제외하였다.
비록 많은 문서를 고찰하지는 못했지만, 그러나 본 논문에서 고찰한 소수의 문서를 통해서도 과거시험의 세부적인 절차 진행을 파악할 수 있었고, 과거 문화의 몇몇 단면을 살펴볼 수 있었다.
이러한 고문서들은 과거제도와의 유기적인 관계 속에서 연구되어야 할 것이며, 이렇게 할 경우 과거시험의 세부적인 진상을 탐구하는 데 도움이 될 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 현전하는 과거 관련 고문서의 수량이 극소수여서 연구에 한계가 있다.

영어초록

This paper tries to scrutinize actual circumstances and cultural aspects of the State Examination in Joseon Dynasty by examining several paleographic documents related to the State Examination System, with the archive science perspective.
While both official and private documents were written as ancient documents related to the State Examination, only a few of them are descended in these days. Reviewed documents in this study are, therefore, defined in substantial ones or documents with specific patterns.
Ancient documents in this study are as follows: Paper for public notice by county officer (Seol-Gwa-Ji-Wi Cheob; 設科知委帖), Qualification certificate for some exam (Jo-Heul Cheob; 照訖帖), Record of the applicant’s identity and his four ancestors’ title and name (Sa-Jo Dan-Ja; 四祖單子), List of Sa-Jo Dan-Ja (Nok-Myeong Dan-Ja; 錄名單子), Certificate for confirmation of examinee’s renaming (Gae-Myeong-Jeung-Bing Lib-Ji; 改名證憑 立旨), Justification Letter for applicant’s absence from some exam (Jin-Si-Jang; 陳試狀) etc. as documents before entering the examination site; and Certificate for passing the primary level exam for Confucian classics or Chinese classic literature (Baek-Pae; 白牌), Certificate for passing the higher level exam for recruiting government officials (Hong-Pae; 紅牌), Greeting letter of the successful applicant to the King (Yuk-Hang Dan-Ja; 六行單子), Certificate for property donation to the successful applicant (Byeol-Geub Mun-Gi; 別給文記) etc. as document after leaving the examination site. Documents written in the middle of the examination site are the State Examination papers (Si-Gwon; 試券), Expounding test paper (Gang-Ji; 講紙) etc., but those documents are excluded in this study since the author already dealt with them in his doctoral dissertation.
Even though this paper examines only a small number of documents, it is possible to understand specific processes and some cultural aspects of the State Examination through the paleographic documents in this study.
Such paleographic documents should be studied in the close relationship with the system of the State Examination, and in this way it is helpful to study detailed information about the State Examination System. There are, however, a very small number of extant documents about the State Examination, so the study in this area has its limit.
