이 글은 식민지 조선 청년과의 연애 및 결혼으로 가정을 이룬 일본인 처들이 패전(1945) 이후 한국에서 어떠한 삶을 살았는지, 그녀들이 어떠한 인식과 시선(frame)의 정치 아래 재현되되어 왔는지 다양한 역사적 사례들을 통해 재구성하였다. 특히, 한국전쟁 이후 남한에 잔류하게 된 이른바 ‘재한 일본인 처’는 크게 두 가지 유형으로 나뉘는데, 첫째, 식민지 시기 이래, 남편·자녀와 함께 계속 거주한 경우, 둘째, 일본의 패전 즈음, 남편을 따라 조선으로 새롭게 이동해 온 유형을 들 수 있다. 패전과 함께 일본 국적이 박탈된 조선인 남편과 마찬가지로, 일본 국적에서 이탈된 그녀들은 남편이 한국전쟁으로 사망하거나 결혼 생활이 파탄에 이르게 된 이후에도 전후 일본의 탈식민 정책에서 의도적으로 누락되어 모국 귀환이 구조적으로 봉쇄된 이들이다. 이 글에서는 재한 일본인 처의 삶과 재현과 관련, 시기적으로는 기존 논의의 대략적 하한선이었던 1960년대 이후부터 탈냉전 시기까지를 통시적으로 다루었으며, 일본인 처를 다룬 문학, 수기, 기사 등 다양한 재현의 영역들을 발굴하였다. 한일국교 정상화나 탈냉전 등 한일 간의 결정적 관계 재배치의 국면들에서, 일본인 처의 존재는 양국의 국가적 이해관계나 반공의 정세에 맞추어 편의적으로 전유되었으며 대체로 한일 어느 쪽에서도 환대받지 못하는 것이었다. 그러나 이 글에서는 제국-식민이라는 전전 역사의 피해자, 곧이어 들이닥친 냉전의 수난자로서 그녀들의 삶 이외에도, 그녀들이 한국 사회에서 살아가기 위해 고군분투한 지난한 인정투쟁의 과정과 사회적 연대(solidarity)를 수행한 환대의 방식에도 주목하였다.

영어초록

This article reconstructs the lives of Japanese wives who formed families through romantic love or marriages with Korean youth during the colonial era in Korea, and explores the manner in which they have been represented within the political context post-defeat in 1945. In particular, so-called “Japanese wives in South Korea,” after the Korean War, can be broadly categorized into two types: firstly, those who continued to reside with their husbands and children since the colonial period, and secondly, those who newly relocated to Korea alongside their husbands around the time of Japan’s defeat. Much like their Korean husbands who had their Japanese nationality stripped away shortly after Japan’s defeat, these women found themselves intentionally excluded from post-colonial policies in Japan, even after their husbands had either died in the Korean War or their marital lives had broken up. Their return to their homeland was structurally obstructed.
This article encompasses the lives and representations of Japanese wives in South Korea in terms of chronology, extends from the approximately demarcated lower limit of existing discussions, from the 1960s onwards, up to the post-Cold War era. It delves into various realms of representation, such as literature, personal narratives, and articles that depict the lives of Japanese wives in South Korea. Amid pivotal developments in the Japan-Korea relationship, such as the normalization of diplomatic relations or the post-Cold War realignment of their ties, the presence of Japanese wives has largely been instrumentalized to fit the respective national interests and anti-communist agendas of both countries. However, this article goes beyond their roles as victims of imperial-colonial history and subsequent sufferers of the Cold War, shedding light on the struggles these women endured to integrate into Korean society, as well as their endeavors in the recognition struggle, and the modes of social solidarity they engaged in for their survival.
