설화 <우렁색시>, <용자 살리고 얻은 색시>, <새털 옷 입고 왕이 된 남자>에 나타난 여성의 행동 방식과 관계 지속의 문제 (The Problem of Continuing the Relationship in Korean Folklore , , and )

초록

<우렁색시>, <용자 살리고 얻은 색시>, <새털 옷 입고 왕이 된 남자> 세 이야기는 제3자의 일방적인 개입으로 인해 관계 지속이 되지 않는다는 같은 문제 상황을 가지고 있지만 그 해결 양상이 다르게 나타난다. 이는 세 설화에 등장하는 여성이 관계를 지속하는 데에 있어 그 역할이 다르게 나타나기 때문이다. 본고에서는 <우렁색시>의 색시, <용자 살리고 얻은 색시>의 용녀, <새털 옷 입고 왕이 된 남자>의 처녀를 중심으로 관계의 지속이 어떠한 방식으로 이루어지는 지에 대해 탐색해 보았다.
<우렁색시>, <용자 살리고 얻은 색시>, <새털 옷 입고 왕이 된 남자>는 ‘관탈민녀형’설화로 사회적인 힘이 있는 인물이 힘이 없는 인물의 아내를 강제적으로 빼앗는 서사가 공통적으로 나타난다. 또한 각기 설화에서 등장하는 남성 인물은 기본적으로 문제를 해결할 능력을 가지고 있지 않다. 그러나 같은 문제 상황이 발생되더라도 그 해결 양상은 다 다르게 나타나는데 이는 설화 속에 등장하는 여성들의 행동 방식이 다르게 나타나기 때문이다.
먼저 <우렁색시>에서 노총각은 원님이 색시를 데리고 가 버리자 아내를 뺏긴 탓을 어머니에게 하며, 죽어서 새가 된다. 새가 되어 색시를 찾아간 남자를 원님은 귀찮다며 죽여 버리고 색시는 새를 묻어준다. 이 때 총각과 색시는 모두 문제 상황의 발생에서 무기력한 모습을 보인다. 즉 아무런 대처를 하지 않는 것이다. 또한 상대방의 소망이 무엇인지 알려고 하지 않는다. 이에 색시는 강제적으로 원님에게 귀속되고 남자는 죽을 수밖에 없다. 이러한 서사는 관계의 지속이 처음부터 가능하지 않으며 행복한 결말을 맺을 수 없다.
두 번째로 <용자 살리고 얻은 색시>에서 남자는 용녀를 두고 원님과 내기를 하게 된다. 능력이 없는 남자는 능력이 있는 원님에게 용녀를 빼앗기는 것이 당연하다고 생각하여 근심에 빠지게 된다. 이 때 용녀는 자신의 힘에 아버지의 힘을 더하여 문제 상황을 해결한다. 용녀는 상대방의 소망이 무엇인지 알고 이를 해결하고자 노력한다. 용궁에서 가져온 물건으로 하여금 남자가 내기에서 이길 수 있도록 도와주는 것이다. 용녀가 직접 나서 문제를 해결함으로써 관계를 지속하는 것이다.
그러나 이러한 방식으로 관계를 지속하게 되더라도 이후 같은 문제 상황이 발생했을 경우 여전히 남자는 대처할 수 없을 것으로 예상된다. 언젠가 다시 문제가 발생했을 때 한쪽만 노력하여 지속되는 관계는 그 불완전성으로 인해 관계의 지속이 건강한 방향으로 흘러가기 어렵기 때문이다. 이러한 서사는 처음에는 관계의 지속이 가능하지만 계속적인 관계 유지가 가능할지에 대해서는 의문의 여지로 남는다.
마지막으로 <새털 옷 입고 왕이 된 남자>에서 남자는 왕이라는 강력한 존재에 의해 아내를 빼앗기게 된다. 이 때 처녀는 <용자 살리고 얻은 색시>의 용녀와 같이 새샙이가 원하는 것이 무엇인지 알고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 <우렁색시>에서의 색시처럼 힘없이 왕에게 끌려가게 되더라도 다시 관계 회복을 위한 노력을 하는 것이다.
이것이 <새털 옷 입고 왕이 된 남자>에서의 처녀는 용녀와 같은 능력이 없음에도 무기력한 <우렁색시>의 색시와 다르게 문제를 해결하게 되는 원인이다. 상대방의 소망이 무엇인지 알아 차렸기 때문에 본인의 능력과는 상관없이 이는 남자의 성장을 도와주어 관계의 지속을 할 수 있게 된다. 즉 처녀는 아무 능력이 없는 남자에게 ‘새 잡아서 삼 년, 공부해서 삼 년, 뜀뛰어서 삼 년, 구 년을 공부’를 해 가지고 오라고 요구함으로써 남자로 하여금 자신과의 관계를 주체적으로 유지할 수 있게 하는 힘을 기르게 만드는 것이다.
또한 처녀는 이에 그치지 않고 남자에게 왕이 될 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위한 치밀한 계획까지 세운다. 처녀가 웃지 않았던 이유는 남자가 성장한 이후 자신을 찾아올 것을 대비해 남자를 왕으로 만들 기회를 조성하기 위해서였다. 이러한 처녀의 모습은 남자를 도와 왕으로 만들고, 자신이 왕비가 됨으로써 두 사람 모두가 상생할 수 있는 관계를 만든 것이다. 이러한 서사는 계속적으로 건강한 관계 지속이 가능하며 두 사람 모두를 성장시킬 수 있는 관계 맺음의 방식이다.
이렇게 세 이야기를 견주어 살펴보았을 때, <새털 옷 입고 왕이 된 남자>의 처녀의 모습이 가장 관계를 지속하는 데에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것을 알 수 있다. 이러한 처녀의 모습에서 우리는 관계를 지속하는 데에 중요한 두 가지 요소를 알 수 있다. 바로 ‘기다림’과 ‘준비’이다. 서로 상생하기 위하여 관계에서 기다림이 필요한데, 그 때 둘의 관계가 지속될 수 있는 9년의 준비과정을 거쳐야 하는 것이다.
이와 같이 자신이 상대방을 어떠한 방식으로 대하느냐에 따라 관계를 유지할 수 있는 힘이 있느냐, 없느냐가 결정된다. 또한 상대방을 변화시킬 수 있게 하느냐, 그렇지 못하느냐에 따라서 관계를 맺었던 것이 계속 유지될 수 있다. 이러한 관계 맺음의 방식은 어떻게 관계를 맺느냐에 따라 서로를 성장시킬 수 있는 기회를 만들어 주느냐, 그렇게 하지 못하느냐의 문제까지 연결될 수 있다.

영어초록

A given problem in each Korean folklore <Snail Bride>, <A Daughter of the Dragon King>, and <The Man Who Wears Feathers> is same. A couple from each folklore confront the separation, and are forced to deal with the problem of continuing the relationship. Although <Snail Bride>, <A Daughter of the Dragon King>, and <The Man Who Wears Feathers> deal with the same problem, the aspects of solving the problem differ from each other. And this difference is caused by a woman's attitude from each story. In this paper, the aspects of solving the problem focusing on women's side are studied.
<Snail Bride>, <A Daughter of the Dragon King>, and <The Man Who Wears Feathers> are the same type of folklore which is about 'the powerful man's taking someone's wife away'. Usually this type of folklore, the male character has no power to protect the female character, and he is forced to be separated from a woman he loves by another powerful man. Each husband from <Snail Bride>, <A Daughter of the Dragon King>, and <The Man Who Wears Feathers> has no ability to maintain their relationship with his wife. The wife always plays a leading role for dealing with the problem. However, among these three folklore, depending on a wife's attitude toward the relationship with a husband, the aspects of solving the problem appears in different ways.
In case of <Snail Bride>, when a district magistrate took a husband's wife away, the husband blamed his mother, and died. Then he became a bird, and went to his wife's new house. But when he went to see his former wife, the district magistrate killed the bird. And the wife buried the bird. During this process, the husband only showed inactive behavior. He didn't try hard enough to get his wife back, but just blamed his mother and died. Therefore, the wife had no choice but to follow the district magistrate. In this kind of situation, the relationship between husband and wife cannot last.
In case of <A Daughter of the Dragon King>, a husband took a bet with a district magistrate on his wife. First, the husband was anxious about the bet, and worried that he might lose his wife. At this point, his wife solved the problem using her father's power. She sent her husband to her father who is the dragon king in the water land. The husband visited the palace of the dragon king, and got a special gift from his father-in-law. Using this gift, the husband won the bet, so he was able to maintain the relationship with his wife. In <A Daughter of the Dragon King>, the wife found the way to continue the relationship.
However, even though they managed to maintain the relationship this time, they might not be able to save it next time. If only one person from a relationship is trying to solve the problem, it will be difficult to last the relationship in the future.
In case of <The Man Who Wears Feathers>, a wife was taken by a king. This time the wife doesn't have the powerful father like the wife from <A Daughter of the Dragon King>. That is why she was taken feebly like the woman from <Snail Bride>. After she was taken, she didn't smile at all against the king.
Even though the wife from <The Man Who Wears Feathers> didn't have ability like the wife from <A Daughter of the Dragon King>, she solved the problem in a different way. Unlike the wife from <Snail Bride>, she helped her husband to improve himself. Before she was taken, she demanded her husband to be trained for nine years. She made him to grow his own power in order to maintain their relationship in an independent way.
While she was captured, she had planned a scheme for making her husband a king in the future. Not smiling was a strategy to achieve her scheme. Because of her effort, her husband had a chance to improve himself, and became equally the powerful man. So eventually they both became a king and a queen. In this case, they both put an effort mutually to maintain their relationship. This is a stable way to solve the problem, so in the future they also would be able to save their relationship.
In order to maintain the relationship in a healthy way, understanding the story of <The Man Who Wears Feathers> is important. Like the man and woman in this story, "waiting" and "preparation" are the essential elements for continuing the relationship in a healthy way.
As discussed above, depending on the wives's attitude toward their husbands, the aspects of solving the problem are changed. How one forms the relationship with other influences on the issue of maintaining the relationship. If one can give an opportunity to another to be improved and changed, the relationship can be stable.
