한국 역사지리정보의 디지털 이행과 분석, 그리고 역사 GIS의 과제 (Digital Transition and Analysis of Korean Historical Geographic Information, and Challenges of Historical GIS)

초록

본 연구는 한국의 역사지리정보 DB 구축과 관련된 선행 연구를 검토하고 그 성과와 한계를 짚어 향후 과제를 제시하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 역사지리정보를 담은대표적 문헌인 고지도, 지리지, 근대지형도가 어떤 과정을 통해 디지털 매체로 전환되어왔고, 웹서비스를 통해 공유되는가를 검토한다. 초기 디지털 기술 도입 이후, 역사지리정보는 전자문화지도 제작의 일환으로 제작되고 있고, 최근에는 역사 GIS 방법론을통해 도상 자료로 머물던 역사지리정보를 시공간 설계 기반의 주제 레이어로 구축해가고 있다. 하지만 지금은 역사 GIS가 디지털 인문학(Digital Humanity, DH) 연구로 활용되기 위해서는 역사지리정보와 인문학 데이터베이스 간 의미 관계(Semantic Relation) 구축 연구도 필요한 시점이 되었다. 역사지리정보를 GIS 레이어로 구축함으로써 얻을수 있는 주요 장점은 세 가지가 있다. 첫째, 새로운 역사지리정보 수치를 산출해 낼수 있다. 둘째, 역사지리정보를 현재 지리정보와 중첩함으로써 시간, 공간, 주제간 조합이 훨씬 유용해진다. 셋째, 텍스트상에서 확인하기 어려운 공간 구조에 접근하는 것이 용이해진다. 그리고 역사 GIS의 향후 과제로 네 가지를 제시한다. 첫째, 역사지리 정보 문헌의 디지털콘텐츠 구성과 온라인 표출 방안 개선, 둘째, 역사지리정보를 제공하는 통합 플랫폼의 개발, 셋째, 시기별 핵심 역사지리정보 레이어의 확대 구축, 넷째, GIS 외에 온톨로지, 빅데이터, 인공지능 등의 신기술 수용을 통한 역사지리정보 활용성의 증대이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to review previous studies related to the construction of historical geographic information DBs in Korea, point out their achievements and limitations, and suggest future tasks. To this end, this study examined how old maps, chorography, and modern topographic maps, which are representative documents containing historical geographic information, have been converted to digital media and shared through web services. Initially, historical geographic information was produced as part of electronic cultural atlas, and recently, historical geographic information has been built as a thematic layer based on spatio-temporal design through historical GIS(HGIS) methodology. However, in order for historical GIS to be utilized for Digital Humanity (DH) research, it emphasized the need to build a semantic relationship between historical geographic information and humanities databases. In this article, There are three main advantages to building historical geographic information as a GIS layer. First, it generates new historical geographic information figures. Second, the overlaying of historical geographic information with current geographic information allows for spatial combinations of time periods and topics. Third, it reveals spatial structures that are difficult to see in the text. And this study suggested f our f uture tasks f or historical GIS. First, improving the digital content organization and online presentation of historical geographic information literature, second, developing a historical geographic information integration platform, third, establishing a core historical geographic information layer for each period, and fourth, expanding the possibilities of utilizing historical geographic information by adopting technologies such as ontology, big data, and artificial intelligence.
