초록

본고는 팬데믹이 드러낸 사회적 고통의 모습을 불평등과 혐오라는 키워드를 통해 살펴보며, 아울러 혐오와 그리스도교의 연관성을 분석한다. 첫 번째 부분에서는, 사회적으로 민감한 이슈들과 교회 차원의 돌봄이 필요한 소외 계층에 침묵과 외면으로 일관하고 있는 천주교의 문제점을 진단한다. 이러한 선택적인 사회 참여는 결국 교회 안에 만연한 차별과 혐오를 드러내고 있는 것이며, 그 뿌리로서 오랜 시간 천주교회를 잠식해온 엘리트주의를 제시한다. 교회의 엘리트주의는 단지 성직자 중심주의라는 구조적인 차원으로 환원될 문제가 아니라 평신도의 순응과 공조를 통해 유지되어 온 만큼, 교회의 모든 구성원이 함께 고민하고 변화해야 할 문제이며, 이를 위해서는 교회의 영성을 점검해야 한다.
두 번째 부분에서는, 프란치스코 교종의 회칙 『모든 형제들』을 통해, 엘리트주의를 극복하고 팬데믹 시대 사회적 고통에 귀 기울이고 응답하기 위한 천주교 시민의 영성을 제안한다. 우선, 착한 사마리아인의 비유를 통해 교종이 강조했듯, 고통받는 이들에게 다가가 그들의 곁이 되며, 그들과 연대하여 인간의 존엄을 회복하는 ‘고통의 곁에 다가서는 영성’이 필요하다. 또한, 단순히 시혜적인 차원의 선행을 넘어 사랑을 통해 삶의 양식을 변화시키고, 그 사랑을 사회 정치적 차원으로 확장하는 ‘카리타스의 영성’도 필요하다. 이를 위해서는 교회의 구성원 모두가 교회 안팎의 고통받는 이들에게 적극적으로 다가가 그들을 품어야 하며, 본당 중심의 신앙생활에서 벗어나 일상에서 그리스도를 따르는 삶을 살아야 하고, 지역 사회와 유기적으로 결합하여 신자와 비신자의 구분을 뛰어 넘는 공동체를 만들어야 한다. 이러한 영성이 곧 세상 속에서 하느님을 드러내고 협소한 엘리트주의 질서를 극복하는 영성이며, 팬데믹 시대의 사회적 고통에 귀 기울이는 가톨릭 시민의 영성이다.

영어초록

This paper examines the Korean Catholic Church’s response to the social suffering revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The church has been cooperative with following government guidelines for the pandemic. Never the less it has failed to care for the people at the margins who need attention and help the most. This is evidenced by the church’s willful silence over sensitive issues, such as the debate over the anti-discrimination bill. I argue that this selective response to social suffering reveals the church’s deep-rooted disgust and apathy toward those who do not fit within the church’s implicit and explicit boundaries of neighborliness. In the first part of the paper, I suggest that the Church’s elitism is a pervasive problem that fosters contempt and judgment toward the marginalized. However, the elitism of the church is not just a matter of reforming the structural dimension of clergy-centrism. This is an issue that all members of the church must ponder and transform together, because it has been maintained through the conformity and compliance of the lay faithful.
In the second part of the paper, I propose a deeper spirituality for Catholic citizens to help them overcome elitism and respond to social suffering in a more comprehensive way as we move forward from the pandemic. By reading Pope Francis’ latest encyclical Fratelli Tutti, I illustrate two important characteristics of this renewed spirituality. Firstly, The Catholic laity must be able to reach out to their actual neighbors, instead of spiritualizing their suffering. Unless one actively encounters those who suffer in their concrete reality and stand by their side, suffering remains empty and abstract. Without taking action, one cannot alleviate suffering nor uphold the human dignity that is entitled to all human beings. Secondly, the Catholic laity must live out caritas, or Christian love. Caritas, however, goes beyond benevolent good deeds; this virtue is meant to transform one’s lifestyle through love and to extend that love from the individual dimension to the socio-political dimension. To this end, all members of the church must actively recognize and embrace those who are suffering both inside and outside the church. They need to break away from the parish-centered religious life, and closely work with local communities in order to build a solidarity that transcends the division between Christians and non-Christians. As we move beyond the pandemic, this richer spirituality will direct the Catholic citizens to a more practical and meaningful way of manifesting God’s love in the world and can help to overcome the narrow elitist order in the church.
