초록

한 편의 이야기는 어떻게 만들어지고, 표준화되며, 소멸하는가? <일타홍 이야기>는 물음에 대해 일정한 해답을 준다. 해답을 찾기 위한 전제로, 모든 이야기는 역사적 사실에 기초해 있다는 상식에 둔다. <일타홍 이야기>의 원천 역시 실재한 역사적 사실에서 출발한다. 김명시가 편찬한 『무송소설』이 <일타홍 이야기>가 실사임을 방증하기 때문이다. 『무송소설』에는 심희수가 사랑한 기생 부생이 일찍 죽었고, 그 후에도 평생토록 부생을 잊지 못했다는 내용을 담았다. <일타홍 이야기>의 원천이었다. 사실은 방사형으로 번진다. 이야기 속 주인공에 대한 사실과 허구가 혼용되고, 이야기 집단의 도덕규범에 따라 주인공에 대한 평가도 더해지면서 극적으로 바뀐다. 그 흔적이 『교거쇄편』과 『이야기책』 등에 남았다.
방사형으로 퍼져나간 이야기는 어느 순간 전형적인 틀을 갖추게 된다. 일종의 표준틀이 만들어지는데, <일타홍 이야기>의 표준은 임방의 『천예록』에서 비롯된다. 『천예록』은 액자구성을 취해 ‘만남-이별-재회-죽음’이라는 본이야기를 담았다. 본이야기는 전대의 다양한 이야기를 수합 정리한 것이다. 표준이 만들어지면 일화는 더 이상 방사형으로 번지지 못한다. 표준 안에서 약간의 변화가 있을 뿐이다. 물론 『금계필담』처럼 비주류를 따른 사례도 있지만, 대부분은 표준틀 안으로 수용되었다.
표준이 바뀌는 경우도 있다. 그것은 일상의 개입에서 비롯된다. 일상은 타자의 이야기를 자기 문제를 환치하는데, 『동패락송』 계열이 그러했다. 일상의 문제는 독자로 하여금 내면화하는 구성을 취하게 하며, 내면화는 잠재된 욕망을 자극한다. 욕망은 작품의 변이로 이어지기도 한다. 『동패락송』 계열을 준용하면서도 일타홍의 죽음을 지우거나, 일타홍이 다른 사람 집에 의탁하는 내용을 삭제한 야담집들이 존재하는 것도 내면화 도정에서 발생한 욕망이 작동한 결과였다. 또한 그것은 야담이 자기갱신을 하는 현상이기도 했다.
자기갱신 과정에서 급속하게 전개된 매체 변환은 <일타홍 이야기>를 새로운 국면으로 이끌었다. 매체 변환은 ‘집’으로 향유되던 야담의 독서 방식을 바꾸었다. 바뀐 독서 방식은 독자에게 개별 작품을 유기적으로 읽도록 요구했다. 전체 안에서 부분의 의미를 읽는 방식이 아닌, 하나의 개별 작품을 꼼꼼하게 읽는 방식으로 바뀐 것이다. 그러나 전근대 작품을 근대문학으로 전환하기에는 당시의 사회문화적 환경과 작가의 역량에 문제가 있었다. 어정쩡한 텍스트 생성은 바로 그런 이율배반적 상황의 단면을 담은 결과물이었다. 이와 달리 다른 한편에서는 전근대 야담 향유 방식을 그대로 준용하기도 했다. 연활자본 야담집의 간행이 그 예라 하겠다. 변화와 수용, 전혀 다른 두 방향이 공존했던 것이다. 그러나 <일타홍 이야기>는 새로운 표준을 마련하지 못하고 소멸하였다. 중세의 감수성을 근대의 틀 안에 억지로 집어넣는 것은 소멸로 가는 당연한 수순이었다.

How is a story created, standardized, and extinguished? This article paid attention to the story of “The Story of IlTaHong” under these questions. The premise was based on the common sense that all stories are based on historical facts. Under this premise, the source of “The Story of IlTaHong” was found in the Musongsoseol (撫松小說), compiled by Kim Myeong-Si (金明時). In the Musongsoseol, it is recorded that the gisaeng Shim Hee-soo (沈喜壽) loved died early, and he never forgot that her for the rest of his life. This is a historical fact and was the source of “The Story of IlTaHong”. The anecdote spread radially. The story was dramatically transformed and enjoyed with the addition of evaluation according to the moral norms of the story group, and traces of it were left in GyoGeoSwaePyeon (郊居瑣編) and YiYaGiChaek (利野耆冊). The fact that Shim Hee-soo's love was called ‘Beautiful Woman [美姝]’, BoMiRan (寶美蘭), and IlTaHong (一朶紅) suggests how multi-layered the reality was.
Anecdotes form a standard frame at some point, and ImBang (任埅)'s CheonYeRok (天倪錄) is the starting point. CheonYeRok summarizes the various anecdotes of the previous generation into a complete framework. Shim Hee-soo configures a frame composition in a way that tells a story, and the storyline of ‘meeting-parting-reunion-death’ is put in the frame. Once the standard is established, the anecdote no longer spreads radially. There are only minor changes within the standard framework. Of course, there are cases of non-mainstreaming, such as GeumGyePhilDam (錦溪筆談), but most of them were accepted within the standard framework. However, sometimes standards change. It comes from everyday intervention. Daily life replaces the story of others with one's own problems, and the DongPaeRakSong (東稗洛誦) series played that role. The DongPaeRakSong series has become a new standard, pushing out the CheonYeRok series. However, in the process of internalizing with one's story, the reader's desire works. Desire also led to variations in the work. It can be said to be a kind of Yadam (野談) self-renewal. This is the reason why the changes in the DongPaeRakSong series occurred.
The rapid media transformation in the process of self-renewal led “The Story of Iltahong” to a new phase. The media conversion changed the way Yadam's reading behavior, which was enjoyed as a ‘story group’. It required readers to read individual works organically. Instead of reading the meaning of parts within the whole, it has changed to a method of meticulously reading individual works. However, in order to convert pre-modern works into modern literature, there was a problem with the difference in the socio-cultural environment at the time and the author's competence.
