일본 제국주의와 식민지 언론, 그리고 ‘깨끗하고 건강한 몸’-<매일신보>, <동아일보>,<조선일보>의 매독담론 - (Japanese Imperialism, Colonial Media, and ‘Clean and Healthy Body’ - Discourse on Syphilis in 『Maeil Shinbo』, 『Dong-A Ilbo』 and 『Chosun Ilbo』 -)

초록

본 연구에서는 식민지 언론에 나타난 매독담론을 통해 일본 제국주의의 차별적인 통치전략을 밝힌다. 식민지 조선의 언론을 보면, 조선총독부 기관지『매일신보』는 제국일본의 입장을 충실하게 반영한다. 민간지『동아일보』는 여성해방과 조선 하층민과 조선인의 삶에 관한 관심을 잘 반영하며, 여성 인권신장에 큰 노력을 기울이고 있다. 한편『조선일보』는 상업자본주의와 결탁하여 남녀에게 차별적인 위생정책을 적용하고 있다.
식민지 언론의 매독담론을 통해, 식민지의 위생정책과 가부장제를 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제국과 식민지의 위생정책이 각 신문에 어떻게 나타나는가?『매일신보』는 제국 일본,『동아일보』는 사회적 약자,『조선일보』는 남녀에게 차별적인 위생정책이 적용되고 있다. 이를 통해 성별, 지역, 계층 간에 다르게 적용된 제국주의의 차별적인 통치전략을 알 수 있었다.
둘째,『매일신보』와 『동아일보』,『조선일보』는 성병감염 주체를 누구로 상정하고 있는가?『매일신보』는 여성의 건강한 몸으로 제국의 군인을 양성해야 한다는 태도다. 따라서 유곽을 이용한 남성에게 성병의 책임을 돌리고 여성을 보호하자는 태도다.『동아일보』는 식민지 서민의 삶에 주목하여 여성해방운동과 공창폐지를 적극적으로 보도하며 여성인권문제에 깊은 관심을 기울이고 있다. 한편『조선일보』는 가부장제와 상업주의가 결합하여 예방에 목적을 둔 성병기사의 독자는 여성, 치료에 목적을 둔 성병광고의 독자는 남성이라는 차별적인 시선을 적용한다. 이를 통해 각 신문의 남녀평등에 대한 인식의 차이를 알 수 있었다. 이 연구를 통해 식민지 언론에 나타난 매독담론의 전체상이 드러났다.

영어초록

This study reveals the differential governance strategy of Japanese imperialism through the discourse on syphilis that appeared in the colonial media. If you examine the media in colonial Joseon, 『Maeil Shinbo』, the newspaper of the Japanese government-general, faithfully reflects the position of imperial Japan. The private magazine 『Dong-A Ilbo』 reflects the interest in women's liberation and the lives of the lower classes and Koreans in the Joseon Dynasty, and directs much effort into promoting women's human rights. Meanwhile, 『Chosun Ilbo』 is applying discriminatory hygiene policies to men and women in collusion with commercial capitalism.
The results of examining the colony's hygiene policy and patriarchy through the discourse on syphilis in the colonial media are as follow. First, how are the sanitary policies of empires and colonies appearing in each newspaper? 『Maeil Shinbo』 is imperial Japan, 『Dong-A Ilbo』 is the socially underprivileged, and the 『Chosun Ilbo』 has discriminatory hygiene policies applied to men and women. Through this, it was possible to know the differential governance strategy of imperialism applied differently among genders, regions, and classes.
Second, who do the 『Maeil Shinbo』, 『Dong-A Ilbo』 and 『Chosun Ilbo』 assume as the subject of sexually transmitted diseases? 『Maeil Shinbo』 is an attitude that women should train the soldiers of the Empire with a healthy body. Therefore, it is an attitude to blame the sexually transmitted diseases on the men who use the yuyu and protect women. 『Dong-A Ilbo』 devotes close attention to women's human rights issues by actively reporting the women's liberation movement and the abolition of communism, directing attention to the lives of the common people in the colony. Meanwhile, 『Chosun Ilbo』 is combined with patriarchy and commercialism, applying a discriminatory view that the readers of sexually transmitted disease articles are women and the readers of sexually transmitted disease advertisements are men. Through this, we can determine the difference in the perceptions of gender equality in each newspaper. This study reveals the overall picture of the discourse on syphilis in the colonial media.
