『고려사』의 간행 유통과 동아대 소장 『고려사』 판본의 특징 (The Publication and Distribution of Koryo History(『高麗史』) and the Characteristics of One Owned by Dong-A University)

초록

조선 문종 1년에 편찬이 완료된 『고려사』는 단종 1년 4월 경에 처음으로 인출되었다. 그러나 그 인출 규모가 소량인데다 궁궐에만 보관돰으로써, 이후 추가 인쇄와 반포 요구가 이어졌다. 『고려사』의 반포는 상당 기간 유보되다가 성종 초에 을해자본 『고려사』가 간행되면서 비로소 반포되었다.
조선 성종대 이후 『고려사』는 관료와 지식인 사회에 널리 유통되었다. 성종 5년부터 『고려사』는 경연 자료로 채택되었으며, 현안 문제를 논의하는 데에도 자주 활용되었다. 지식인 사회에서 ‘『고려사』 읽기’가 확산되는 가운데, 개인적으로 『고려사』를 소장하는 등 민간에 유통되기 시작하였다.
광해군 4년 경에는 목판본 『고려사』가 간행되어 지속적으로 인출됨으로써 민간 유통을 더욱 확산시킬 수 있었으며, 17세기 이후 지식인 사회에서 『고려사』를 연구하고 이를 자신의 저작에 활용하는 등 그 이해의 폭이 넓혀지고 있었다. 이같은 분위기 속에서 『고려사』를 텍스트로 하여 수정, 보완하거나 개편하는 작업도 시도되어 안정복의 『동사강목』과 같은 역작이 나타날 수 있었다. 조선말에 이르기까지 『고려사』 판본의 유통 확대와 그에 대한 폭넓은 이해는 『고려사』 판본을 현재까지 남겨 전할 수 있는 계기가 되었던 것으로 평가할 수 있다.
현재 국내외에서 확인되는 『고려사』 판본은 80여 종에 이른다. 그러나 대부분 결본이고 완질의 『고려사』 판본은 동아대학교 소장본을 포함하여 5종에 지나지 않는다. 동아대학교가 소장하고 있는 목판본 『고려사』는 75책의 규모인데, 2권 1책을 기준으로 하여 지와 열전의 경우 그 일부를 1권 1책이나 3권 1책으로 묶은 결과이다.
동아대본 『고려사』는 서울대 규장각 소장의 목판본 『고려사』 85책과 동일한 판본이다. 다만 규장각 소장본에 비해 자면이나 계선에서 나뭇결의 터짐 현상 혹은 탈락 현상이 더 많이 나타나고 있다. 이는 인출 시기가 늦은 후쇄본이거나 보관과 유통과정에서 비롯된 것이라 할 수 있다.
목판본 『고려사』에서는 오탈자가 확인된다. 오탈자가 많게 된 것은 편찬 당시 초고에서부터 초간본을 저본으로 한 을해자본의 출현, 그리고 을해자본을 저본으로 복각 목판본을 간행하는 과정에 이르기까지 누적된 결과라 할 수 있다. 목판본 『고려사』에 오탈자가 많다 하더라도 그 수량은 『고려사』 전체 80여만 자 가운데 극히 일부일 것이고, 이것이 『고려사』 판본의 갖는 가치를 훼손하지는 않을 것이다.

영어초록

Koryo History(『高麗史』) whose compilation had been finished in the first year of King Moonjong was firstly introduced around April in the first year of King Danjong in the Chosun Dynasty. However, a small quantity was publicized inside palace only, which caused a request of its additional printing and publicizing. It was not until the earlier years of King Seongjong that the circulation of Koryo History was distributed with its publication in type of Eulhae(乙亥) letter after reserving its distribution for a long time.
Koryo History had been a wide circulation in the society and bureaucrats and intellectuals since the time of King Seongjong. It had been adopted as a reference text for contests since the fifth year of King Seongjong and frequently used in the discussion of current issues. Reading Koryo History spread in the intellectual society and quite a few people owned it individually. Ultimately it began to be distributed in the reading public at large.
In the fourth year of King Gwanghae its wood block books were printed in quantity continuously and this made their gradual public distribution possible. Since the 17th century intellectuals had conducted their research concerning Koryo History and used many quotations from it in their writing. Many began to understand it in this way. In this environment the attempt was commenced to revise or supplement it adopting Koryo History as text and as a result a masterpiece like Jeongbok Ahn’s Dongsagangmok(『東史綱目』) could be published. Therefore, it is believed that expanding the distribution of Koryo History and the broad understanding of it up to the end of Chosun Dynasty period served as momentum for inheriting it to this day.
There are 80 editions of Koryo History home and abroad these days. But most of them are missing volumes and only 5 complete sets of works exist including one owned by Dong-A University (hereinafter the DAU Book of Koryo History). The DAU Book of Koryo History printed from woodblocks is compiled into 75 volumes, combining some of Ji(志) and Yeoljeon(列傳) into a book in one volume or a book in three volumes.
The DAU Book of Koryo History is the same book as one in 85 volumes owned by Gyujangkak(奎章閣), Seoul National University, but it has more cracking and falling off grains in typefaces and lines compared with one owned by Gyujangkak. They were caused by carelessness in the process of distribution and it proves that the DAU Book of Koryo History was printed later than one owned by Gyujangkak.
It is confirmed that quite a few misprints and omitted words are found in Koryo History printed from woodblocks. This resulted from the fact that missing and omitted words had been increased in the process of publication from the first edition to Eulhae letter edition and to final carving edition in woodblocks. However quite a few misprints and omitted words there are found in Koryo History printed from woodblocks, they limit to only a small number among 800 thousand words in all. In conclusion, it is firmly believed that this never diminishes Koryo History printed from woodblocks in value.
