초록

This paper is composed of two parts. The first part analyzes the wall paintings of the pre-Islamic period palace of Ustrushana rulers, unearthed at the Kala-i Kakhkakha I site in northern Tajikistan. The paintings were discovered in 1970s, but their pictures, drawings were fully published only recently. Comparing with wall paintings from the Pendzhikent site, one of the ancient cities of Sogdiana, the author will date the paintings from the palace of Ustrushana to the 740s or slightly later. The second part will focus on daggers and swords with two suspension mounts. Several swords with such mounts are preserved at the Shōsō-in storehouse in Japan, and it is generally accepted that this type of suspension mount was introduced to the East by the Sasanian Empire. Through an examination of daggers and swords represented in Central Asian art, the author will consider the possibility that blades with two suspension mounts became popular in Central and East Asia in connection with the Hephthalite occupation of Central Asia from the second half of the fifth century through the first half of the sixth century.
