초록

고구려 고분벽화에 보이는 북방·서역계 문화요소의 유입경로와 분별을 위해서는 중국의 고분미술에 보이는 북방·서역계 문화요소의 비교 연구가 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 중국 북조 시대 고분 출토품 가운데 금속 용기를 중심으로 북방·서역계 문화특징을 보이는 사례들을 수집하여 출토 지역과 기형별로 분류하여 분석하였다. 중국 북조 고분 출토 북방·서역계 금속용기의 연원은 크게 그리스·로마의 헬레니즘 계통과 아케메네스·사산의 페르시아 계통으로 구분되었다. 이러한 외래 요소의 유입에는 중간 지점에 위치한 박트리아, 쿠샨, 소그드 지역의 교량적 역할이 두드러진다. 실제 그리스 로마와 사산에서 직접 유입된 외래계 기물들도 있지만 많은 경우 중간에 위치한 박트리아에서 헬레니즘 문화의 부활을 배경으로 고전 전통에 기반하면서 재지의 문화적 변용을 더하여 제작한 기물들이 동서교류의 과정에서 중국의 북조에 전달된 것으로 보인다. 북방·서역계 금속용기들의 상징적 기능은 그 연원을 그리스 로마에서는 심포지엄, 디오니소스 신앙, 헌주 의례에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 페르시아에서는아케메네스조의 동물양식을 중심으로 한 왕실 금속용기의 제작과 사용, 조로아스터교 신앙에 일부 기반한 연회도와 사산조의 왕권의 권위를 강조한 수렵도 주제가 금속용기에 일정한 상징성을 부여하면서 페르시아 양식의 전파에 역할을 한 것으로 생각된다. 북조 고분 출토 북방·서역계 금속용기들은위진북조대 중국의 북방·서역계 벽화묘와 함께 해당 지역까지 전파된 외래문화 요소들을 실증하며이들 기물들과 벽화묘의 분포와 전파경로의 고찰은 고구려의 북방 서역적 문화 요소를 분별해 내는데 중요한 비교자료가 될 수 있을 것이다

Koguryo and Chinese tomb murals from the 4th to the 7th centuries are distributed in Kugnaesong and Pyongyang, of Koguryo and Datong, Shanxi, Cixian, Hebei, Taiyuan, Shanxi, Guyuan, Ningxia, and Xi’an, Shaanxi in China. Nomadic and Central Asian cultures shown in the murals and relief sculptures might not be enough evidence to prove the direct introduction of the foreign culture and interaction.
However, nomadic and Central Asian artifacts excavated in those regions where the mural tombs are located certainly prove the nomadic and central asian culture either by the visit or immigration of foreigners or by the trade of ato mb occupant.
The nomadic and Central Asian gold and silver objects of the Northern Dynasties of China can be divided into two types, Greek and Roman and Persian. Styles and Decorative subjects made in ancient Greece were transmitted to the Roman empire, and then to the Minor Asia, Black Sea areas, Sassanian Persia, and finally to Central Asia and China. Sassanian style objects include those made by Sogdians as well as those imitated by Bactria, Hephthalite, or China. Some of them were made by foreign artisans who came into China or made by Chinese artisans with the foreign technique introduced by that time. In addition, there are cases not made in Greece, Rome, Sassanian Persia, but in Bactria and Sogdiana where Roman and Sassanian style objects were imitated. Thus, in the transmission and trades of those nomadic and Central Asian objects were made possible partly by Roman and Sassanian while one may not disregard the certain role of Sogdian, Hephthalites and Turks as the intermediary group contributed to this transaction.
The fact that Greek and Roman subjects such as the Dionysus and Persian themes like the royal hunting are found on the nomadic and Central Asian objects excavated from Northern Dynasties tombs suggests that not only the nomadic and Central Asian cultural elements but also the religious and ritual symbolism might have been transmitted at the same time. Those objects might have been used as a symbolic medium to show a tomb occupant as a direct participant in the East-West trades or as a personal from a certain ethnic and cultural origin. Furthermore, it is noticeable that certain types of gold and silver objects and certain Byzantine and Sassanian coins with holes to attach as an ornament are repeatedly discovered in those tombs, which can be interpreted that those nomadic and Central Asian related tomb occupants assigned cultural significance on them.
