부장유물로 본 마한계사회 性의 식별과 사회조직 (Gender Identification and Social Organization Based on Mahan Tomb Artifacts)

초록

이 글의 목적은 마한계 무덤유적 출토유물의 분석을 통해 피장자 性의 식별을 시도하고, 당시의 사회조직과 계층성을 추적하는 데 있다. 먼저 인골자료의 분석을 통해 성과 연령에 따른 사회조직의 연구가 이루어진 김해 예안리유적을 소개한다. 다음으로 마한계의 대규모 무덤유적을 대상으로 성과 계층성과의 상관관계를 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 이러한 분석결과와 고고학적 맥락을 토대로 분구묘의 밀집도와 완성도가 높은 완주 상운리사회의 성과 사회조직의 변화를 추론하고, 그 특징과 의미를 제시하고자 하였다.
완주 상운리와 수계리, 오산 수청동유적의 분석결과, 환두도·철모·철촉·철부·단야구·마구류는 상호 간에 깊은 상관관계를 가지며 남성의 표상물일 가능성을 보여 주었다. 이에 비해 대표적인 장신구인 옥은 여성과의 관련성을 강하게 시사한다. 철기류와 옥은 성 외에 복수의 사회적 역할을 가질 수 있고, 그 대표적인 예로 계층성을 들 수 있는데 마한계유적에서도 이를 확인할 수 있었다.
상운리의 마한사회는 최상층(점토곽)-상층(초대형 목관)-중층(중소형 목관a)-하층(중소형 목관b)의 전형적인 피라미드 계층구조를 가지고 있었다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 최상층과 상층의 피장자 중에서 남성묘는 거의 대부분 분구의 중앙에 위치하는 것으로 보아 각 친족집단의 시조로서 최고의 지위를 누렸던 것으로 추정된다. 따라서 상운리사회는 남성 중심으로 지위와 권력이 세습되는 부계사회였을 가능성이 가장 높아 보인다. 마한 중기에 문화적 최전성기와 사회적 계층화의 정점을 보였던 상운리사회는 후기에 들어서면 쇠퇴의 모습을 보이게 되는데, 이는 백제의 남정과 관련되는 것으로 이해된다.

영어초록

This paper aims to identify the gender of deceased individuals by analyzing the artifacts excavated from Mahan tombs and by tracing the contemporaneous social organization and hierarchy. First, the tombs of the Yeanri site in Gimhae, South Korea, are examined. In this case, human skeletal evidence was analyzed in order to undertake a study of social organization based on gender and age. Next, the correlation between gender and hierarchical performance at large-scale Mahan tombs was considered. Finally, based on the results of analysis and archaeological context, the study deduced gender and social organizational changes in Sangun-ri society, based at Wanju County, South Korea, which boasts high burial tomb density and completeness, and explored its characteristics and meanings.
The results of the analysis undertaken on the archaeological remains of Sangun-ri and Sugye-ri of Wanju County and Sucheong-dong of Osan City in South Korea showed that swords with ring pommels, iron helmets, iron arrowheads, iron axes, forging tools, and horse gear had deep correlations with each other, thus potentially serving as the representative objects of a man. On the other hand, jade, which was a typical material used for making ornaments, could be suggested as having strong symbolic connections to women. However, ironware and jade can achieve multiple social roles beyond gender. Hierarchy is a representative example, as observed in the case of Mahan tombs.
The Mahan society of Sangun-ri had a typical pyramidal hierarchical structure consisting of an uppermost social stratum (represented by the use of the outer clay box), an upper stratum (extra-large wooden coffin), a middle stratum (small and medium-sized wooden coffin a), and a lower stratum (small and medium-sized wooden coffin b). Most of the men’s tombs belonging to the uppermost and upper social strata were located in the center of the burial mound, a possible indicator that men, as the progenitors of each kin group, led lives of the highest status. Therefore, it is most likely that Sangun-ri society was a patrilineal society where status and power were hereditarily centered around men. Sangun-ri society, which reached its peak of cultural dynamism and social stratification during the mid-Mahan period, began to decline toward the latter period. The reason for its decline is understood to be related to Baekje’s southern conquests.
