발해 인동문계 와당의 계통과 고구려 연관성 검토 (The Genealogy of the roof-end tiles with honeysuckle design in Balhae and the influences of Koguryo)

초록

본 논문에서는 발해지역에서 출토되고 있는 인동문계 와당, 즉 인동문 와당과 인동문이 결합된 복합문 와당의 형태를 고구려 와당과 비교하여 고구려에서 발해로 이어지는 인동문계 와당의 문화적 계통과 고구려 연관성 등을 살펴보았다.
고구려 인동문 와당은 인동문의 좌우비대칭을 통한 문양의 회전성을 강조하는 방향으로 전개되었고, 이러한 회전성은 회전문 와당으로 발전하는 계기가 되었다. 이에 비하여 발해 인동문 와당은 인동문의 좌우대칭을 통한 문양의 균형성에 중점을 두고 있었기 때문에 고구려 인동문 와당과 연결되는 계통성은 비교적 적었던 것으로 파악되었다.
고구려 복합문 와당은 4개의 양각형 연화와 선각형 연화를 교대로 배치시킨 연화＋연화문 와당이 기본형으로 나타나고 있었는데, 인동문이 연화＋연화문 와당과 결합하여 선각형 연화를 대체함으로써 연화＋인동문 와당이 파생되고 있었으며, 점차 인동문이 중심문양으로 등장하면서 인동＋복합문 와당으로도 전환되고 있었다. 또한 선각형 연화문은 인동문과 합체되기도 하고, 심지어 합체된 문양이 중심문양으로 등장하면서 고구려 와당의 특징이었던 양각형 연화의 제작전통이 소멸되는 경우도 있었다.
이러한 복합문 와당의 문양 구성과 배치는 고구려만의 독창적인 것으로 와당 면의 문양이 독립적일 경우에만 출현할 수 있는 형태라고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 蓮瓣形 와당을 기본 모티프로 하는 동아시아 와당에서는 보편적으로 나타날 수 없는 형태이기도 하다. 따라서 이러한 형태의 와당이 발해지역에서도 출토되고 있다는 사실은 발해 인동문계 와당이 고구려와 밀접한 계통 속에서 출현했던 것으로 생각된다. 또한 고구려 와당은 집안과 평양지역이라는 이원적인 구도를 형성하면서 전개되고 있었는데, 발해 인동문계 와당이 집안지역보다는 평양지역의 와당과 밀접한 연관성을 보여주고 있다는 점은 주목할 만하다. 이러한 사실은 발해 와당이 고구려 평양지역의 계통 위에 발해적인 이미지를 가미하여 형성된 것이 아닐까 생각된다.

영어초록

While the roof-end tiles with lotus design were the mainstream of Balhae roof-end tiles, the roof-end tiles with honeysuckle design were in fashion partly too. As honeysuckle roof-end tiles are appeared in Koguryo exclusively, it can be concluded that the roof-end tiles with honeysuckle design in Balhae succeeded the cultural characteristics of Koguryo.
Honeysuckle roof-end tiles in Koguryo can divided as exclusive honeysuckle roof-end tiles that are composed of honeysuckle design only and composite roof-end tiles with the combination of honeysuckle and other designs. As exclusive honeysuckle roof-end tiles emphasize revolving figures of the design, they look more active than roof-end tiles of lotus design. These revolving figures of the design were intensified as time goes by and developed to the roof-end tiles with revolving figures of other designs.
But exclusive honeysuckle roof-end tiles in Balhae which stress balance of designs are different from Koguryo roof-end tiles which stress revolving figures of designs. As a result, exclusive honeysuckle roof-end tiles in Balhae scarcely succeeded the characteristics of Koguryo roof-end tiles. Because though they accepted honeysuckle design, the purpose of production is different.
Composite roof-end tiles in Koguryo, basic form was lotus ＋ lotus design which arranged four carved-in-relief and carved-in-line lotus flowers alternately. However, as honeysuckle design combine with lotus ＋ lotus design replacing with carved-in-relief lotus design, lotus ＋ honeysuckle design showed up. And as honeysuckle design which was composite design at the outset became the central design, composite honeysuckle design also showed up. Furthermore carved-in-line lotus flowers which were composite design before combine with honeysuckle design. And as united design appear as central design, carved-in-relief lotus design which was made traditionally for a long time was lost. These roof-end tile with composite design are the characteristics of Koguryo, that couldn't appear if the elements of design were not individual. For this reason, roof-end tile with composite design couldn't showed up any other areas except Koguryo where lotus design was the basic form.
Accordingly it may concluded that the roof-end tile with composite design were influenced by the characteristics of Koguryo roof-end tiles, and the roof-end tile with honeysuckle design in Balhae succeeded Koguryo directly.
And from the fact that the roof-end tile with honeysuckle design in Balhae succeeded Koguryo roof-end tiles which prevailed only in Pyungyang, we can guess that the culture basis of Balhae was Pyungyang area.
