초록

이 연구는 1920년 일제 강점기에 태어나 1976년 한국 경제 성장기에 생을 마감한 공예가이자 판화가인 유강열의 현대 공예계 지형 구축에의 참여와 예술 욕망에 주목하고 있다. 한국 전쟁 이후 본격적인 활동을 시작했던 그는 국가 재건과 근대화의 스펙트럼 속에 현대미술의 제도적 정초의 현장에 있었다. 교육, 전시 등 예술의 전문적 영역을 체계화하는 데 일조하며 공예계의 영토를 만들었던 한편, 예술에의 욕망을 꾸준히 작품으로 현현하였다. 당시 공적 영역에의 참여를 통한 제도의 구축과 예술가의 표현 의지 사이를 오갔던 작가의 상황을 짐작케 한다. 이 연구는 이에 관한 구체적인 과정을 중심으로, 당대적 세계관과 예술 문제를 살펴보는 것을 주요 내용으로 한다. 서론에서는 1950년대 이후 한국의 상황과 미술 제도, 장르 경계의 문제 제기로부터 ‘공예계’라는 용어가 시사하는 것처럼 전문가에 의한 전공과 전시 등으로 제도들에 의한 공예 지형이 구축되는 상황을 살펴보았다. 다음으로 공예계를 구축하는 두 개의 커다란 제도인 국립박물관 산하 한국조형문화연구소와 한국공예시범소에서의 활동을 고찰하였다. 마지막으로 제도를 통한 공예계에서 교육체계의 문제와 정작 제도와 영역에서 벗어나 자유로운 예술에의 욕망을 작품의 독해를 통해 볼 것이다. 이는 유강열이 살았던 당대를 넘어 오늘날까지 공예계가 지난 전통과 현대의 이원화, 현대미술과의 중첩과 내포, 디자인과의 교차와 결별의 제도와 영역의 딜레마를 인식케하는 역사적 실례가 아닐 수 없다.

영어초록

This study examines the construction of the system and topography of the modern Korean crafts industry through the life of Yoo Kangyul, a craftsman and printmaker, born in 1920 during the Japanese colonial rule and ended on the road of economic growth in Korea in 1976. He began his full-fledged activities after the Korean War, and was at the site of the institutional foundation of contemporary art in the spectrum of national reconstruction and modernization. While helping to systematize specialized areas of art such as education and exhibitions, he created the territory of the art&craft world, while steadily expressing his desire for art into works. At that time, the situation of the artist, who moved between the establishment of an institution through participation in the public domain and the artist’s will to express it, can be guessed. The main content of this study is to examine the contemporary worldview and art issues, focusing on the specific process of this. In the introduction, as the term ‘art&craft world’ suggests from the issue of the Korean situation, art system, and genre boundaries since the 1950s, we looked at the situation in which the craft landscape was built by the institutions through majors and exhibitions by experts. Next, the activities of the Korean Art and Culture Research Institute under the National Museum of Korea and the Korean Craft Demonstration Center, which are two large institutions that establish the craft industry, were reviewed. Finally, we will see the problems of the educational system in the craft world through the system and the desire for free art to escape from the system and realm through the reading of the work. This is a historical example that reminds us of the dilemma of the system and domain of tradition and modern dualization, overlapping and connotation with contemporary art, intersection with design, and separation from the art world beyond the time when Kangyul Yoo lived and until today.
