When Filipina American writer Jessica Hegedorn published her postmodern novel Dogeaters in 1990, many Filipino Americans have been voicing their invisibility and silence not only in America but also in Asian America. E. San Juan Jr. deplored: “We are here, but somehow it’s still a secret.” Leny Mendoza Strobel questioned: “Can other Asian communities who have established viable communities and secured leadership role within Asian America create a space for Filipino America? Who will benefit from this decentering of Asian America?”
Due to unique historical experiences which forced the people of the Philippines to be ‘included’ in America as colonial subjects, that is, as “nationals” without citizenship, the national, cultural, and racial boundaries dividing the Philippines and America have been blurred. Filipino/a America’s invisibility and silence in Asian America as well as in America reflects this colonial and neocolonial relationship between the Philippines and the USA. The USA wants to forget its ‘exceptional’ imperial project belying its glorious ‘American exceptionalism.’ Filipino Americans often find it difficult to locate their literature within Asian American cultural nationalisms, some of which have facilitated identity politics.
I approach to Asian American literature and discourses as flexible, constantly shifting and heterogeneous. The paper, to take part in productive dialogues for constructing viable ‘Asian American Literature’ discourses, focuses on Filipina American writer Jessica Hagedorn’s postcolonial text, Dogeaters, to challenge the boundary of Asian American Literature as well as American Literature. It demands to question not only the binary division between domestic and foreign, Asian and America, origin and destination, and Asian American studies and Postcolonialism, but also the nature the national boundary itself.
