The Solidarity of Human Ecology and Ecological Theology for Our Ecological Crisis

The ecological crisis that includes global warming is driving the entire living community, including human civilization, to extermination, the IPCC reports. In order that theology might contribute to resolving this crisis, I argue that ecological theology needs to collaborate with the ecological sciences, and in particular with the discipline of human ecology. This collaboration can be practiced through ethical overlap, a method of dialogue between science and theology. There is common ground between human ecology and eco-theology: in the first instance, the human being and the social system are never separate from the ecosystem. Both disciplines also emphasize humanity’s role, whether it is seen as destructive or constructive. Nevertheless, there are difficulties in building a bridge between human ecology and eco-theology. For example, some environmentalists deny evolution, because of their conservative theology. Furthermore, while human ecology presupposes co-adaption between the social system and the ecosystem, many ecological theologies seem to ignore the importance of the human social system. In order to establish a more effective solidarity between human ecology and eco-theology, I modify Edward Wilson’s interdisciplinary model. If one keeps a critical viewpoint against Wilson’s tendency of biological reductionism and his intention to fix the order of interdisciplinary collaboration, however, this modified model can be utilized as a useful method in which four areas or disciplines – natural science, social science, the humanities including theology, and environmental policy – will be mutually interactive with careful strategy in order to resolve the current ecological crisis such as climate change.
