五洲(오주) 李圭景(이규경) 실학의 한 방향 -西勢(서세) 認識(인식)에서 국제통상론으로- (One tendency of Sirhak(實學, practical science) of Oju Lee gyu-gyoung(五洲 李圭景) -international trade theory from understanding on Western Powers-)

초록

李圭景(1788～1856)의 西勢 認識과 국제통상론에 대해서는 지금까지 적지 않은 연구가 이루어졌다. 필자는 기존의 논저들이 이규경의 「斥邪敎辨證說」ㆍ「西洋通中國辨證說」ㆍ「與番舶開市辨證說」의 저술 연대 고증을 간과한 탓에 그의 서세인식의 변화를 제대로 분석하지 못했음을 지적하고자 한다. 본고는 3개 텍스트의 저술 연대를 고증함으로써 그의 서세인식이 변화한 궤적을 재추적하고, 이에 따라 그의 국제통상론도 다시 한 번 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 이규경은 서세인식에 있어 李수光(1563～1628)의 영향을 받았다. 그는 이수광의 영향으로 동서양의 왕래와 교류에 긍정적이었는데, 이는 그의 「서양통중국변증설」에 드러난다. 그는 1850년 이전에 저술한 「척사교변증설」에서 프랑스 함선의 무력시위를 목격하고 서양의 침략에 대한 우려를 표명한적이 있으나, 1850년 이후에 저술한 「여번박개시변증설」에서는 그동안 있었던 동서양 사이의 마찰에 대해 서양의 입장을 옹호하며 서양과의 평화로운 무역이 이루어질 수 있으리라 기대했다. 그의 서양에 대한 우호감은 당시 일어났던 서양과 조선의 마찰에 대한 소식을 듣고도 바뀌지 않았던 것이다. 이규경은 바다를 무역의 통로로 인식하고 있었고, 국제무역의 도구로서 선박을 주목하였다. 그는 평소 선박에 대한 관심이 남달랐고, 선박의 설계원리에 대한 이해도도 높았다. 그는 조선 선박의 문제점으로 치밀하지 못한 제도를 지적했고, 당시 조선 근해에 출몰하기 시작한 서양 선박의 제도를 배워 자국의 조선 기술을 개선하고자 했다. 그의 이러한 사고는 北學派의 利用厚生 사상과도 맥이 이어져 있다. 또 그는 선박을 병기로도 인식했으나 서양에 대한 우호감과 제국주의에 대한 이해 부족으로 인해 海防이라는 문제에 대해서는 상대적으로 관심이 적었다. 이규경의 조부 李德懋(1741～1793)는 일본이 해외와의 무역을 통해 국력과 문화를 크게 발전시켰음을 지적한 바 있다. 이규경도 조부의 영향으로 외국과의 교역을 국가 발전의 관건으로 파악하여 서양과의 무역을 적극 주장했다. 그는 자신의 주장을 뒷받침하기 위해 서양과의 무역이 안전하다는 것을 증명하고자 했다. 그는 李之함(1517～1578)과 柳馨遠(1622～1673)의 경세론을 근거로 자신의 논리를 전개했으며, 당대에 있었던 서양과의 마찰에 대해서도 서양측의 입장을 옹호하며 서양에 침략의 야욕이 없다는 것을 설득하려고 하였다. 그가 이처럼 지나치게 낙관적으로 느껴질 만큼 외국과의 무역을 희망했던 것은, 조선의 낙후된 경제를 발전시키고자 하는 열망때문이었다. 그의 국제통상론에서는 그의 經世濟民과 이용후생에 대한 의지를 읽어낼 수 있다. 그러나 그의 서세인식과 국제통상론은 지나치게 낙관적이라는 비판을 면하기 어렵다. 그의 국제통상론이 이런 면모를 보이는 것은 무엇보다 국제 정세에 어둡고 제국주의에 대한 이해가 부족했기 때문으로 생각된다.

영어초록

There were a few studies on understanding on Western Powers and international trade theory of Lee gyu-gyoung(李圭景)(1788～1856) until now.
This researcher intends to point out that existing theses couldn't analyze the changes of Western power awareness properly as ignoring the writing solidarity historical research of Lee kyu-kyung 「dialectic essay about Rejecting Heterodoxy(斥邪敎辨證說)」ㆍ「dialectic essay about western come-and-go between Europe and China(西洋通中國辨證說)」ㆍ「dialectic essay about trading with western vessels(與番舶開市辨證說)」. Through the writing solidarity historical research of 3 texts, this thesis intends to retrace the trace of his changes for the changes of Western power awareness and then, reexamine his international trade theory again.
Lee kyu-kyung was influenced by Lee soo-kwang (李睟光)(1563～1628) for Western power awareness. He was positive for the exchange between the East and the West because of the influence of Lee soo-kwang (李睟光)(1563～ 1628). And, it is shown in his 「<dialectic essay about western come-and-go between Europe and China(西洋通中國辨證說)」. He witnessed armed protest of French fleet and expressed worries for the invasion of the West in 「dialectic essay about Rejecting Heterodoxy(斥邪敎辨證說)」 written before 1850. But, he was favorable for the standpoint of the West and expected for the peaceful trade with the West for the previous conflicts between the East and the West in 「dialectic essay about trading with western vessels(與番舶開市辨證說)」 written after 1850. His friendly mind for the West was not changed although he listened to the conflict between the West and Joseon at that time.
Lee kyu-kyung focused on the ship as a tool of international trade. His interests in ship was outstanding commonly and his understanding for ship's designing theory was high. He pointed out incompact system as a problem of Joseon ship and intended to learn the system of Western ship which started to appear around the Joseon ocean at the time and improve it. His thought is related to Riyonghusaeng(利用厚生, science for utilization and welfare) of Bukhakpa(北學派, Northern learning group). In addition, he considered the ship as a weapon blocking the invasion of external enemy. On the other hand, he didn't know the international politics, so he couldn't seek measures actively.
Lee duk-moo (李德懋)(1741～1793), a grandfather of Lee kyu-kyung pointed out that Japan greatly developed national power and culture through the trade with overseas. Lee kyu-kyung actively insisted the trade with the West by grasping the trade with other countries is the key of national development because of the effects of his grandfather. He intended to verify that the trade with the West is safe so as to support his insist. He showed his own theory based on the governing theory of Lee ji-ham (李之菡)(1517～1578) and Yu hyung-won (柳馨遠)(1622～1673). He hoped the trade with other countries enough to be felt to be excessively optimistic because of the passion to develop Joseon's backward economy.
In his international trade theory, there is his will for Gyoungsejemin(經世濟 民, administrating the state to relieve the people´s suffering) and Riyonghusaeng(利用厚生, science for utilization and welfare). However, there is certain criticism that his Western power awareness and international trade theory are excessively optimistic. His international trade theory shows the aspect because he didn't know the status of international politics and his understanding of imperialism was insufficient.
