新羅 白紙墨書 『大方廣佛華嚴經』 變相圖의 양식특징과 신앙적 배경 연구 (A Study on the Stylistic Characteristics and Religious Background of the Illustration of the Avatamska Sutra in Ink on White Paper Drawn in Silla)

초록

본고는 선행연구에서 주존의 도상과 보살상의 양식특징 등 주요 부분만 제한적으로 논의되었던 신라 백지묵서『대방광불화엄경』변상도에 관한 후속연구로, 주존의 불신, 광배, 대좌, 보살상의 착의법과 장신구, 보리쌍수, 화불 등의 도상요소와 화면의 구성방식을 같은 시기 중국과 일본에서 제작된 불화나 불상들과 비교하여 도상과 양식특징을 파악하고, 더 나아가 그 국제성과 특수성에 대해서 보다 구체적으로 규명하였다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 신라가 唐과의 교섭을 통해서 선진의 불교문화를 수용하고 재빨리 토착화하고 있었다는 사실을 파악하였으며, 이『화엄경』 사경 변상도가 통일신라시대 불교문화의 수준과 기량을 대변하는 주요작품임을 확인함으로써 선학들의 논지를 검토하고 보완하였다.
그리고 이『화엄경』사경은 연기법사가 돌아가신 아버지가 성불을 이루어 연화장세계에 왕생하기를 기원하고자 제작한 것으로 추정된다. 이『화엄경』사경의 신앙적인 배경이 되는 화엄정토신앙은 실천적인 측면을 강조했던 통일신라시대 화엄사상의 특성이 반영된 것으로, 당시 불교도들은『화엄경』을 사경하거나 『화엄경』의 주존인 비로자나불상 조성 등을 통해서 화엄정토신앙을 염원했던 것으로 파악된다. 따라서 이『화엄경』사경은 통일신라시대에 유행했던 화엄정토신앙의 주요 사례이며, 석남사 비로자나불상(766), 보림사 철조비로자나불상(858년), 동화사 비로암 비로자나불상(863년경), 축서사 비로자나불상(867년경), 해인사 법보전과 대적광전의 비로자나불상(883) 등과 같은 신앙적인 배경을 갖고 제작된 것임을 밝혔다.

영어초록

Advanced research focusedly discussed the main areas of the Illustration of the 『Avatamska Sutra』 in ink on white paper drawn in Silla such as the icons of the main-Buddha and stylistic characteristics of the Bodhisattva statue regarding iconic elements, for instance, the body of the main-Buddha, nimbus, and pedestal expressed on it, regulations of dressing for the Bodhisattva statue and accessories, two-bo trees, or nirmāna-buddha, and the composition of the picture. This study has compared those with Buddhist paintings or statues of the Buddha produced in China or Japan during the same period and examined the internationality and distinctiveness found in the icons and stylistic characteristics in detail. With this consideration, it is possible to discover the fact that Silla did accept and naturalize advanced Buddhist culture promptly through negotiation with Tang. By verifying this Painting of the 『Avatamska Sutra』 is one of the major works that represent the level and capability of Buddhist culture in the era of unified Silla once again, this author has reviewed and complemented the points made by the senior scholars.
Also, it is estimated that this Painting of the 『Avatamska Sutra』 was drawn as Buddhist monk Yeongi wished his late father to attain Buddhahood and pass away to the World of the Lotus Sanctuary. Hwaeom Buddhism’s pureland-belief which forms the religious background of the 『Avatamska Sutra』 reflects the characteristics of Hwaeom Idealism in the era of unified Silla stressing practical aspects. We can assume that during the era of unified Silla, the Buddhists practiced Hwaeom Buddhism’s pureland-belief by either reading the 『Avatamska Sutra』with meditation or building the Vairocana Buddhist statue, the main-Buddha of the 『Avatamska Sutra』. Therefore, we should particularly pay attention to the fact that reading the 『Avatamska Sutra』 through meditation was one of the main examples of Hwaeom Buddhism’s pureland-belief that was popular during the era of unified Silla.
