초록

For a long time, it has been generally accepted that Shakespeare was introduced to Korea in 1906. Previous studies on the history of Shakespeare in Korea all focused on one magazine (Joyangbo) from 1906 and pointed out that Shakespeare was depicted in Joyangbo as a great thinker—a man that Koreans should look up to as a model for enlightenment. Previous studies also paid attention to the translation of the name of Shakespeare (“Saygusbeea”) in Joyangbo and concluded that Shakespeare filtered intro Korea through Japan. However, this study argues that there was at least one earlier example of Shakespeare in Korea, i.e., “Shakespeare” in Chang Bong Hwan’s English book, The Citizen Reader. Chang Bong Hwan (1869-1929) is an important figure in the history of Korean independence movement against Japan’s colonization. He was one of the closest officers to King Gojong and was sent to America as Secretary of Korean Legation in 1893. He studied at the Royal English School of the Joseon Dynasty as part of the first governmental educational reform. Overall, this study demonstrates that Chang’s Citizen Reader was published around 1894 and that “Shakespeare” was introduced to Korea (although being influenced by imperial nationalism) as literature of the Great Britain before it was translated as “Saygusbeea” via Japan. I hope that this discovery can be the beginning of Shakespeare studies in Korea which might further find out the 19th century’s instances of Shakespeare in Korea.
