조선 15세기 전반 경기도 永平縣의 백자제작 배경과 특징 (Background and Characteristic of Manufacturing a White Porcelain in Yeongpyeonghyeon(永平縣) of Gyeonggi Province in the First Half of the 15th Century in Joseon)

초록

이 논문은 새롭게 등장한 ‘永平’명백자의 소개를 통해 기존에 언급되지 않았던 조선 전기 백자 제작지와 그 지방관의 관계 및 지명이 백자에 표시되는 원인에 대한 접근이다.
‘永平’명백자의 제작지는 경기도 永平縣이다. 15세기 전반의 영평현은 조선의 여러 국왕의 강무장으로서 왕실과 깊은 연관성을 맺고 있었다. 조선 전기 국왕은 강무나 사냥으로 지방에 머무를 때 沙器所를 유숙지로 활용하는 경우가 있었다. 당시 영평현은 왕실의 사냥터로 인식될 정도의 넓은 숲과 산들이 자리했으므로 瓷器를 굽기 위한 땔감을 확보하기 용이했다. 당시 영평현은 주변에 백토를 구할 수 있었고 用水의 확보도 용이했다.
영평현의 백자제작과 관련된 배경을 살피는 과정에서 조선 초기 주요백자 생산지의 지방관을 두루 역임한 閔恭이라는 인물의 존재를 파악할 수 있다. 민공은 영평현감을 거쳐 남원부사와 경상도관찰사를 역임하며 그가 남원부사와 경상도관찰사를 거치는 기간은 두 부임지의 백자 생산이 활발하게 이루어졌던 기간과 일치한다. 이와 함께 민공과 인척관계에 있던 다른 여흥민씨들이 지방관으로 머물렀던 경기도 광주와 강원도 양구 역시 조선 초기 백자를 생산했다.
이 논문이 주목하는 경기도 영평현을 시작으로 경기도 광주, 강원도 양구, 전라도 남원, 경상도 고령과 상주 등의 백자 생산은 여흥민씨 지방관들과 깊은 상관관계를 가지고 있었을 것으로 판단된다. 여흥민씨 지방관들은 太宗 이후 외척의 숙청으로 위축된 가문의 입지를 회복하고자 조선 왕실이 선호했던 백자의 생산을 향상시키기 위해 노력했을 것이다.
또한 ‘永平’명백자와 같이 地名만이 표시된 백자는 선행연구에서 접근된 바와 같이 해당 군현에서 소속된 道를 거치지 않고 도성으로 직접 瓷器를 납입할 경우에 해당하는 것으로 파악된다. 지명이 그릇에 표시되는 배경에 대한 유추는 전라도와 충청도 지역에서 생산된 지명이 표시된 분청자와의 연관성을 통해서도 확인된다.

영어초록

This study is the approach to a site of making a white porcelain in the early Joseon period, which had not been conventionally mentioned, and to a cause for being indicated the relationship of its local governor and a place name in a white porcelain, through introducing ‘Yeongpyeong(永平)’ inscripted white porcelain that appeared newly.
The making site of ‘Yeongpyeong(永平)’ inscripted white porcelain is Yeongpyeonghyeon(永平縣) in Gyeonggi Province. Yeongpyeonghyeon in the first half of the 15th century was having deep correlation with royal family as a Gangmu field(講武場) of many kings in Joseon. There was a case that kings utilize Sagiso(沙器所) as the accommodation that will be used when staying in a region due to hunting. In those days, Yeongpyeonghyeon(永平縣) was situated extensive forests and mountains enough to be recognized as a hunting ground of royal family, thereby having been easy to secure firewood for baking porcelain(瓷器). At that time, Yeongpyeonghyeon(永平縣) was available for obtaining white clay around and even for securing fuel and water.
In the process of examining the background related to manufacturing a white porcelain in Yeongpyeonghyeon, the existence of a figure called Mingong(閔恭) can be grasped who was in charge widely of a local governor in the major white-porcelain manufacturing sites in the early Joseon period. As for Mingong(閔恭), the period that he passes through Namwon-busa(府使) and Gyeongsangdo governor while serving as Namwon-busa(府使) and Gyeongsangdo governor after going through Yeongpyeonghyeon-gam(永平縣監) is consistent with the one that the production of a white porcelain in two places had been made actively. Along with this, Gwangju in Gyeonggi Province and Yangu in Gangwon Province where other Yeo Heung Min family members related by marriage to Mingong had stayed as a local governor also produced a white porcelain in the early Joseon period.
The production of a white porcelain in Gwangju of Gyeonggi Province, Yangu of Gangwondo Province, Namwon of Jeollado Province, and Goryeong & Sangju of Gyeongsangdo Province beginning from Yeongpyeonghyeon(永平縣) in Gyeonggi Province to which this study pays attention is judged to likely have kept deep correlation with a local governors from the Yeo Heung Min family. The local governors from the Yeo Heung Min family would strive to enhance the production of a white porcelain that royal family in Joseon had preferred in order to maintain the family that had been shrunken by purging the maternal relatives following king Taejong.
Also, the white porcelain, which is marked only a place name like ‘Yeongpyeong(永平)’ inscripted white porcelain, is grasped to correspond to a case of directly delivering a porcelain to a capital city without going through the province to which the corresponding Gun and Hyeon(郡縣) belong. The inference on the background that a place name is indicated in a bowl is confirmed even through correlation with Buncheong porcelains that are displayed a place name of having been produced in regions of Jeollado Province and Chungcheongdo Province.
