베제클릭석굴 18굴 <消除災難經變相圖> 연구 (A Study of the Transformation Tableaux of the Xiaochu zainan jing from Cave 18, Bezeklik Caves)

초록

본 연구의 대상인 투르판 베제클릭 18굴 출토의 벽화는 현재까지도 <약사설법도>, <약사정토변상도>, <치성광여래도> 등으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 그림과 이 그림의 도상학적 배경으로 짐작되는 『消除災難經』 을 면밀히 비교 검토한 결과, 별에 의한 환난과 재앙 그리고 이를 해결하는 방법을 도해한 <消除災難經變相圖>임을 확인할 수 있었다.
따라서 그림의 본존은 淨居天宮에서 文殊菩薩과 九執, 七曜, 十二宮神, 二十八星, 日月 등의 여러 星神들에게 전생에 사라수왕부처님께 배웠다는 다라니를 전하는 석가모니여래이며, 여래 좌우의 보살, 비구, 구요, 십일요는 설법을 경청하는 하늘의 星辰에 해당된다.
현존하는 치성광여래관련 불화를 통해서 볼 때, 10~11세기 중앙아시아지역에서는 법륜을 지물로 지닌 치성광여래가 널리 유행하였음을 알 수 있었다. 그런데 베제클릭 18굴 출토의 <消除災難經變相圖>의 본존은 전통의 도상 그대로 경전에 충실히 석가모니의 도상으로 표현되어 있어, 敦煌 및 서하지역에서 제작된 <치성광여래도>와는 도상적 차이가 있음을 확인하였다.
天山 위구르왕국 시기 경변상도의 특징은 경전에 대한 충분한 이해를 통해서 독자적인 도상을 창작하였는데, 그 표현이 매우 자세하고 구체적이라는 점이다. 따라서 본 연구에서 다룬 베제클릭 18굴 <消除災難經變相圖> 역시 이러한 위구르불화의 특징을 잘 대변해주는 작품이라고 생각한다.
비록 본 작품이 현존하지는 않지만, 『消除災難經』 을 완벽하게 형상으로 변화시킨 유일한 사례라는 점과 치성광여래관련 불화에서 주존이 석가여래에서 법륜을 든 치성광여래의 도상으로 변화되어가는 흐름의 한 부분을 보여준다는 점에서도 매우 중요한 참고자료가 된다고 본다.

영어초록

The wall painting from Cave 18, Bezeklik Caves in Turfan, is known by several titles, including “Preaching Bhai ajyaguru,” “Pure Land of Bhai ajyaguru,” and “Tejaprabha Buddha.” However, after comparing the painting to the text of the Xiaochu zainan jing (Dhāra ī Sutra of the Magnificent and Virtuous Golden Wheel Buddha-head, Tejaprabha Tathāgata, Who Dispels All Disasters and Calamities), I was able to confirm that it is in fact the transformation tableaux of the Xiaochu zainan jing, which describes disasters and calamities caused by stars and their resolutions.
Therefore, the central figure of the painting should be identified as Śākyamuni, who preaches the dhāra ī that he learned from Śālendra-rāja Buddha during his previous life to Manjuśrī and celestial deities such as the Nine Luminaries, the Seven Planets, the Twelve Zodiac Animals, the Twenty-Eight Mansions, the Sun and the Moon. Thus, the bodhisattvas, the monks, the Nine Upholders, and the Eleven Luminaries, all of whom stand beside the Buddha, are celestial deities who carefully listen to the teaching.
Based on the extant paintings of Tejaprabha Buddha, the figure of Buddha with a dharma wheel was popular from the 10th to the 11th century in the Central Asian region. However, the main figure of the transformation tableaux of the Xiaochu zainan jing from Cave 18 is Śākyamuni based on the traditional iconography that the sutra describes. This representation is different from the other paintings of Tejaprabha Buddha that were produced in the Dunhuang or Xixia regions.
The main stylistic characteristic of a transformation tableaux in the Tianshan Uighur Kingdom period is that the Uighur created their own iconography for a sutra painting based on a thorough understanding on the sutra, and thus their paintings have very specific and detailed pictorial representations. I believe that the transformation tableaux of the Xiaochu zainan jing from Cave 18 surely demonstrates this characteristic of the Uighur painting style.
Even though this painting no longer exists, it still serves as an important reference not only because it is the only example that perfectly depicts the content of the Xiaochu zainan jing but also because it shows the transitional phase of the Tejaprabha Buddha painting in terms of the iconography of the central figure: from Śākyamuni to Tejaprabha Buddha holding a dharma-wheel.
