『1872년 군현지도』 중 경기도 지도의 성격 (The characteristics of the maps of Gyeonggi Province of the county and prefectural maps of 1872)

초록

The maps of Gyeonggi province of the county and prefectural maps of 1872 consist of 40 colored maps including 38 county and prefectural maps and 2 camp maps (鎭營地圖). These maps were completed in 1872 based on the contents of 『Gyeonggieupji (京畿邑誌)』 compiled in 1871. The maps of Gyeonggi province of the county and prefectural maps of 1872 consist of 38 county and prefectural maps and 2 camp maps and 22 maps of them are similar with maps, composition, expression modes included in 『Gyeonggieupji』. On the other hand, maps newly produced like 「Majeon-gun Map (麻田郡地圖)」 or 「Jinwi-hyeon Map (振威縣地圖)」 delivered the regions vividly by zooming in using points of view with composition of landscape paintings and completed the maps like landscape paitings with the actual views by emphasizing the pictorialization method.
Gyeonggi-do plays a role of a fence of the capital city geographically and a center of politics, the military, and economy administratively and has a close relationship with it. In this respect, several things of characteristic contents are found in the maps of Gyeonggi province of the county and prefectural maps of 1872. First, the military contents related to protecting the sea of the west coast (海防) were faithfully reported so that the important spots for protecting the sea routes (海路) and the sea (海防) as well as the battlefields during French campaign against Korea and United States expedition to Korea can minutely be grasped. Second, the contents related to socio-economic aspects including Sachang (社倉), markets (場市), roads (道路), etc. Especially, Sachang was one of the things which symbolized Heungseon Daewongun Regime's reforming politics. The contents recorded in 『Gyeonggieupji (京畿邑誌)』 in 1871 were visually expressed in the maps of Gyeonggi province in 1872. Third, it is noted that the changing aspect of Seowon (Private academies) according to the reformation ordinance as the result of the abolition of Seowon enforced by Heungseon Daewongun was reflected in the maps. Fourth, all the contents of royal tombs (陵), graves(園), and tombs (墓) of the royal families of the Joseon Kingdom located in the whole area of Gyeonggi-do were recorded.
The maps of Gyeonggi province of the county and prefectural maps of 1872 concretely shows Gyeonggi-do which recognized each region. Therefore, they cannot accomplish the unity of the system as the national district maps. However, they can be the important materials which can examine the situations of the regions from the viewpoint of those days as well as can check the local painters' capabilities and variations in Gyeonggi-do according to their participation.
