신라 촌락문서와 『화엄경론』의 유통 (Silla’s Land Documents(新羅村落文書) and Distribution of ‘Exposition of Avatamska Sutra’(華嚴經論))

초록

신라 촌락문서는 한국 고대 사회경제사 복원의 제 1사료이다. 1950년대 문서가 학계에 소개된 이후 다각적으로 연구가 진행되었지만, 작성연대에 대해서는 7세기, 8세기, 9세기 등 큰 견해차가 보이고 있다. 이중 7세기설은 촌락문서의 텍스트적 접근을 넘어 정창원 입고과정과 함께 『화엄경론』을 중심으로 한 불교사 연구를 심화시켰다. 이는 『화엄경론』 유통과 함께 신라와 일본의 화엄학 전개 및 교류양상의 천착을 통해 촌락문서 작성연대를 가늠해볼 수 있음을 말해주었다. 그간 일본의 화엄학 전개와 신라와의 불교교류에 대해서는 주로 8세기를 중심으로 연구가 진행되었다. 그러나 9세기에도 역시 신라 불교의 영향은 이어졌다. 헤이안 시대에는 천태종과 진언종이 주류를 이루고 있었으나, 화엄종에서도 화엄교리를 이해하기 위한 다양한 학문적 활동이 전개되고 있었는데, 그 중 義湘에 대한 관심은 나라 시대와 비교하여 9세기의 특징적인 현상으로 보아도 좋을 것이다. 이러한 일본 불교계의 양상은 신라 불교계의 사상적 변화에 영향 받은 것으로 볼 수 있다. 9세기 신라 불교계에서 의상계 화엄학의 위상은 고려 때 편찬된 『법계도기총수록』을 통해 짐작된다. 이에 따르면 9세기에 의상의 『화엄일승법계도』를 중심으로 의상계 승려들에 의해 화엄교학에 대한 강의와 저술이 이뤄졌음을 알 수 있다. 이와 함께 『법계도기총수록』이 60화엄을 대상으로 하였던 점은 신라 하대 화엄학이 60화엄을 중심으로 전개되었음을 말해준다. 아울러 신라 하대에는 60화엄의 寫經과 石經의 조성이 활발했다. 이렇듯 신라 불교계에서는 하대에 이르러 의상에 대한 사상적 접근과 함께 60화엄에 대한 관심 역시 증가한 것이다. 다만 9세기 이후 신라 하대 불교계의 사상적 경향이 일본으로 어떠한 경로를 통해 유입되었는가의 문제를 생각해 보아야 한다. 실상 신라-일본 간의 공식교류는 8세기 말 단절되었다가 9세기 초에 이르면 다시 우호적인 관계를 회복하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 물론 신라 및 일본의 『화엄경론』 유통양상이 신라 촌락문서의 작성연대를 비정하는 절대적 근거는 될 수 없다. 이를 위해서 문서의 정창원 입고시기 및 과정에 대한 면밀한 분석이 동반되어야 한다는 점이 본고의 한계일 수 있다. 그럼에도 이러한 작업을 진행하는 것은 그간의 연구들에서 촌락문서의 작성연대를 비정한 해당 시기(8~9세기설의 경우)에 왜 문서가 『화엄경론』에 배접되었는지에 대한 고민과 그에 대한 견해가 제시되지 않아 여전히 텍스트만으로 당시 신라와 일본의 사회상을 해석하고 있기 때문이다. 본고를 통해 신라 촌락문서가 불교사적으로도 중요한 사료임이 환기될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

Silla’s Land Documents are the first historical records of the restoration of ancient Korean socioeconomic history. Since the document was introduced to academia in the 1950s, research has been conducted from various angles, but there are large differences of opinion on the date of writing, such as the 7th, 8th, and 9th centuries. Among them, the theory of the 7th century deepened the study of Buddhist history centered on the ‘Exposition of Avatamska Sutra’ along with the process of putting it into the Shosoin Repository beyond the textual approach of land documents. This indicates that the period of creation of land documents can be estimated through the distribution of the ‘Exposition of Avatamska Sutra’ and the development of the Study of Avatamska in Silla and Japan and the research of exchange patterns. In those days, most of researches on the Study of Avatamska in Japan and Buddhist exchanges with Silla was mainly conducted in the 8th century. However, the influence of Silla Buddhism continued into the 9th century as well. In the Heian period, the Tiantai Order and the Shingon Order were themainstream, but in the Avatamska Order, various academic activities were developed to understand the Avatamska’s doctrine. Among them, interest in Euisang can be seen as a characteristic phenomenon of the 9th century compared to the Nara period. This aspect of Japanese Buddhism can be seen as being influenced by the ideological change of Silla Buddhism. The status of the Study of Avatamska of the Euisang family in the Buddhist circle of Silla in the 9th century is estimated through ‘Beobgye-Dogi-Chongsulog’ compiled during the Goryeo period. According to this, it can be seen that lectures and writings on the doctrine of Avatamska were conducted by Buddhist monks in the Euisang family centering on Euisang's 'AvatamskaIlseung-Beobgyedo' in the 9th century. Along with this, the fact that ‘Beobgye-Dogi-Chongsulog’ targeted 60 Avatamska indicates that the Study of Avatamska was centered on 60 Avatamska in the late Silla period. In addition, in the late Silla period, copying or carving on stone of 60 Avatamska were actively performed. As such, in Silla Buddhism, interest in 60 Avatamska also increased along with the ideological approach to Euisang in the latter half of the period. However, it is necessary to consider the problem of how the ideological trend of Buddhism flowed into Japan in the latter half of the Silla period after the 9th century. In fact, official exchanges between Silla and Japan were cut off at the end of the 8th century, but in the early 9th century, friendly relations seem to be restored. Of course, the distribution pattern of ‘Exposition of Avatamska Sutra’ in Silla and Japan cannot be an absolute basis for not determining the date of creation of Silla’s Land Documents. A limitation of this paper may be that a careful analysis of the time and process of the documents being put into the Shosoin Repository for this should be accompanied. Nevertheless, the reason for conducting this study is that there was no thought about why the documents were placed in the 'Exposition of Avatamska Sutra' at the time (8th to 9th centuries theory) when the date of creation of land documents was not determined in previous studies and the social conditions of Silla and Japan at the time are still interpreting only through texts without any views on them. Through this paper, I think that it is possible to draw attention to the fact that Silla’s Land Documents are also important historical records in Buddhist history.
