초록

본 논문은 현시대 보살신앙 중 가장 신앙 시 되는 관음신앙이 대승불교 초기경전인 『법화경』과 『화엄경』을 중심으로 어떠한 사상이 근거가 되어 어떻게 관음사상으로 전개되는지를 규명하려는 목적으로 작성되었다.
관세음보살에 대한 연구는 대부분 신앙 중심으로 이루어져 왔으며, 그 사상적인 연구는 깊이 다루어지지 않고 있다. 현대불교에까지 이어져 오는 대승불교와 보살사상은 경전을 중심으로 전파되었기에, 이러한 관음신앙의 근간이 경전에 있다고 보고, 경전을 토대로 보살사상과 관음사상에 대하여 연구하였다.
『법화경』과 『화엄경』에 나타난 보살사상은 그 중심사상에 따라 다른 입장을 가지고 있다. 우선, 『법화경』에서는 부파불교에서 상반된 길을 가는 존재로 이해하고 있는 삼승 즉, 성문․연각․보살을 일승이라는 한 방향으로 나아가는 존재들로 보았다. 누구나 성불할 수 있는 가능성을 깨닫고 보살도를 닦으면 성불로 나아갈 수 있다는 사상이 바로 『법화경』에 나타난 일승사상과 보살사상이다. 이런 사상을 기반으로 관음사상은 일승을 깨닫게 하기 위한 보살로서 대자대비를 실천하는 현세 구도자이며, 법신불, 화신불의 모습으로 나타나고 있다.
『화엄경』에서는 여래출현과 일승보살도와 십현연기가 중심사상이다. 『화엄경』에서는 발심한 중생이 보살이고, 처음 발심할 때가 바로 정각을 성취하는 때이며, 발심보살이 보살행을 하는 것은 성불로 향해 가기 위해 닦는 보살도가 아니라, 정각을 이룬 부처의 불과행(佛果行)이다. 이러한 『화엄경』의 보살사상은 『법화경』 및 기존 경전의 보살사상과 사상적으로 큰 차이가 있다. 이런 사상을 기반으로 『화엄경』 「입법계품」에서 관음사상은 보살도를 구체적이면서 체계적인 구조를 갖추어 불과행을 드러내는 법신불의 모습으로 나타나고 있다. 관세음보살은 해탈한 자비행의 법신불로서 어떻게 보살도에 머무르고[주(住)], 어떻게 보살도를 닦으며[수(修)], 어떻게 번뇌가 끊어져[단(斷)] 해탈문을 얻는지를 주(住)․수(修)․단(斷)의 구조를 갖추어 구체적인 보살도의 실천 방법을 시현하고 있다.
이러한 보살도의 실천은 불승으로 나아가기 위한 실천방법으로 볼 것인가, 불도행을 시현하는 가르침으로 볼 것인가 라는 경전의 주요 사상에 근거하여 다른 관점을 가지고 있는 것이다. 이러한 경전의 주요 사상에 근거한 보살도는 해석하는 관점에서 그 입장차가 매우 크다고 할 수 있다.

This paper aims to investigate the philosophical foundations and development of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva faith, which is one of the most prominent forms of contemporary Bodhisattva worship, based on the key scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism, namely the "Lotus Sutra" and the "Avatamsaka Sutra." While previous studies on Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva have mainly focused on matters of faith, the philosophical aspects have received less in-depth analysis. Considering that the Mahayana Buddhism and Bodhisattva ideology, which have persisted into modern Buddhism, have been transmitted primarily through scriptures, this study explores the Bodhisattva and Avalokitesvara ideologies based on these scriptures, considering them as the foundation of Avalokitesvara faith.
The Bodhisattva ideologies depicted in the "Lotus Sutra" and the "Avatamsaka Sutra" take different perspectives based on their central teachings. Firstly, in the "Lotus Sutra," the concept of Bodhisattva is understood as beings who follow a path different from that of the Hinayana Buddhism, namely the path of saints, arhats, and pratyekabuddhas. It presents the idea that anyone who realizes the potential for attaining enlightenment can cultivate Bodhisattva practices and progress towards Buddhahood. This concept of Bodhisattva and the idea of realizing the path of saints form the foundation for the doctrine of Avalokitesvara, who is portrayed in the "Lotus Sutra" as the compassionate guide that shows the way of Bodhisattva practices leading to enlightenment. Avalokitesvara is depicted as the embodiment of Dharma deities (Bodhisattvas) and the transformation bodies of Samantabhadra and Manjusri, representing the practice of compassion and wisdom in the mundane world.
as the pinnacle of the Mahayana scriptures, are the manifestation of the Buddha and the practice of Bodhisattva. According to the "Avatamsaka Sutra," sentient beings who generate the aspiration to enlightenment are Bodhisattvas, and the moment of their initial aspiration is the moment of achieving the perfect enlightenment. The practice of Bodhisattva, as described in the "Avatamsaka Sutra," is not the means to attain Buddhahood but rather the conduct of the enlightened Buddhas. In this context, the Bodhisattva's practice is seen as the activity of a realized Buddha, rather than a path leading to enlightenment. This concept of Bodhisattva in the "Avatamsaka Sutra" differs significantly from the Bodhisattva ideologies found in the "Lotus Sutra" and other traditional scriptures.
Based on these ideas, the concept of Avalokitesvara as depicted in the "Avatamsaka Sutra," particularly in the "Chapter on Entering the Dharma Realm," embodies a specific and systematic structure of Bodhisattva practices and reveals the activities of the enlightened Buddhas. Avalokitesvara is presented as the embodiment of Dharma deities, displaying the practice of compassionate deeds.
Even when observing the same Bodhisattva practices, there can be a significant difference in perspective regarding whether they are considered as methods for progressing towards Buddhahood or as teachings that exemplify the path of Buddhahood.
