개방성의 관점에서 바라본 『도덕경道德經』과 미디어아트(Media Art) (A Study on the 『Tao Te Ching道德經』 and Media Art viewed from an openness(開放性) perspective)

초록

개방성(開放性, Openness)은 사전적 의미로 ‘태도나 생각 따위가 거리낌 없고 열려 있는 상태나 성질’을 의미한다. 열려있다는 것은 ‘외부에 대하여서 폐쇄적이지 않으며 상호 관계성을 유지’한다는 것을 의미한다. 노자의 『도덕경道德經』의 상호관계성과 개방성은 백남준 미디어아트를 포함한, 개방적 속성을 가지고는 예술작품 전반에 있어서는 동일한 의미를 가질 수 있다. 예술작품의 ‘제작과정과 전시과정’에 대하여 『도덕경道德經』의 내용과 연계하여 정리하면 다음과 같다. “도(道)는 낳고, 덕(德)은 기르니, 예술가는 ‘창작의 과정’을 통하여 작품을 낳고(道生之), 작품은 관람객을 통하여 길러진다(德畜之). 백남준 미디어아트 작품은 창작의 과정을 통하여 전시장에 전시되고(道生之), 그의 작품은 전시장에서 관람객과 다양한 방식으로 만나고 수용되고 다양한 방식으로 의미가 재생산된다(德畜之). 사람들의 마음에 살아 숨쉬는 작품은 아무리 써도 막히지 않으니, 만물의 근원처럼 샘솟는다(道沖而用之或不盈).”또한 전시장에서 ‘전시되거나 설치된 작품’은 예술가에 있어서는 자신의 내면의 예술성이 ‘창작적 사유과정을 거치고(無爲과정)’, ‘작품으로 구체화되는 제작과정(有爲과정)’을 거쳐서 전시장의 결과물(有․有名)로 드러난다. 이러한 예술가의 작품은 전시장을 방문한 관람객에 의해서 매우 다양한 해석과 이해방식으로 작품의 의미를 재생성해내는 과정을 거치게 된다(無․無爲). 그 의미 생성((無․無名) 과정은 매우 우연적이며 변화무쌍하며 ‘개방성’을 가지게 된다. 이러한 예술의 특성은 관람객의 참여를 중시하는 미디어아트에서 매우 두드러지며, 그 주된 특성은 개방적 특성이라 할 수 있다.
백남준 비디오아트는 미디어아트로서, 하이퍼미디어의 무봉합성, 비경계성, 비선형성의 특성을 동시에 보인다. 이러한 미디어아트 작품과 마찬가지로, 현대사회의 미디어들은 생생하게, “잘 다니는 이는 흔적이 없고, 잘 한 말에는 흠잡을 것이 없다”(善行無轍迹, 善言無瑕讁)는 것처럼, 보다 리얼하게 ‘흠잡을 데 없는’ 정보와 이미지를 전달하고자 노력하였다. 현대 하이퍼미디어의 무봉합성, 비경계성의 구현은 ‘생생한 현장감을 체험하고 싶은 인간의 욕망’과 ‘오늘날의 미디어 기술의 발달’이 가져다 준 결과이다. 이러한 하이퍼미디어 시대의 다양한 사회문화 현상에 대한 이해는 백남준 미디어아트(Media Art)와 같은 예술적 자유로움과 『도덕경道德經』과 같은 철학적 사유를 통해서도 살펴볼 수 있다.

영어초록

Openness(開放性) means a condition or characteristic of attitudes or ideas that are unrestrained and open. The meaning of being open refers to the maintenance of mutual relations without being closed to outside. Interrelationship and openness of Lao-tzu's 『Tao Te Ching道德經』 can have the same meaning in terms of the general works of arts with openness, including Paik Nam-June's media art. ‘Producing process and displaying process’ of arts work can be said in relation to the contents of Baek Nam Joon. “Tao(道) is given to a birth and Te(德) raises so ‘artists give birth to a work through the process of creation’(道生之) and ‘the work is raised through spectators’(德畜之). ‘Paik Nam-June's media art work is displayed in a exhibition hall through the process of creation’(道生之), and ‘his art works meet with spectators in the exhibition hall in various ways, and are accepted and reproduced in various ways by keeping their meaning’(德畜之). ‘The works that are remembered by people are not blocked but well up like the source of everything’(道沖而用之或不盈).”In addition, in the exhibition hall, displayed and installed works are appeared, to artists, as a result(有․有名) of their internal artistic nature going through ‘creative thinking process’(‘無爲’過程) and ‘producing process that shapes up as a art work’(‘有爲’過程). ‘Such works of art go through the process of reproducing their meaning with very different interpretation and understanding by visitors of the exhibition hall.’(無․無爲) ‘The process of generating meaning’(無․無名) is very accidental and changeable as well as having ‘openness’(開放性). This characteristic of arts is distinctive in media art that put importance on visitors' participation, and the main characteristic can be mentioned as open characteristic.
Paik Nam-June's video arts is media art, and it shows non-suture, non-boundary, and non-linear features of hypermedia. Like such a media art works, the modern society's media try to deliver more realistic information and images ‘without blemish’, as a word says, “those who move around well don't have trace and there is nothing to blame on words well spoken”(善行無轍迹, 善言無瑕讁). Realization of non-suture and non-boundary by modern hypermedia is a result of ‘the desires of humans who want to experience vivid feeling as if they are on the spot’, and ‘the development of today's media technology’. Such understanding on various social and cultural phenomenon in such hypermedia period can be examined through artistic freedom like media art and philosophical thinking like 『Tao Te Ching道德經』
