時調의 形式美 考察 -構造와 律格을 中心으로- (A Study on the form of the Sijo -Focusing on its structure and rhyme-)

초록

본고는 시조를 구성하는 형식적인 측면의 문체자질을 분석하여 시조가 갖는 문체미의 하나인 형식미를 규명해 보려는 시도이다. 시조는 3장 6구의 구조로 되어 있으며, 하나의 장을 네 개의 음보로 끊어서 연행하는 4음보격의 율격을 지니는 시가문학이다. 여기서 말하는 구조와 율격은 시조의 형식적 측면과 관련을 맺는 문체자질이라 할 수 있고, 이 둘의 미적 특징에 대한 연구는 곧 시조의 형식적 측면의 문체미라 할 수 있는 형식미를 고찰하는 작업과 궤를 같이 한다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본고는 시조의 구조와 율격을 중심으로 하여, 시조 형식의 미적 특징을 고찰한 작업이다.
주지하듯이 시조는 세 개의 장으로 구성되며, 각각의 장은 다시 대칭되는 두 개의 구로 이루어진다. 그리고 하나의 장은 네 개의 음보로 연행된다. 이에 필자는 시조가 여타의 구조나 율격이 아닌 장․구별 대칭을 통한 균형과 안정을 지향하는 시형과 율격을 갖추게 된 원인을 바로 시조 형성기의 문학 담당층에서 찾고 관련 논의를 진행하였다.
시조가 안정적이며 균형감을 갖춘 3장 6구의 시형을 갖추게 된 원인을 고려와 조선조에 있어서 상층 기득권 집단을 대표하던 사대부의 사상과 가치관이 작품의 형식에 반영되어 나타난 결과로 파악하였다. 상층 집단은 기층민과는 다른 방식으로 삶을 영위하고 문학을 향유했을 것이며, 그것은 바로 현실의 변화나 변혁을 바라기 보다는 현재의 질서를 긍정하는 방향으로 표면화 되었다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 사대부가 시조라는 문학 양식의 창작과 향유에 주된 문학 담당층으로 참여함으로 인하여 시조는 균형과 안정을 지향하는 구조를 갖게 되었다는 것이다. 한편 4음보격의 시조 율격 또한 사대부라는 문학 담당층과 무관하지 않다고 보았다. 3음보격의 율격이 동적이며 변화를 지향하는 특성을 가짐에 비하여, 4음보격은 정적이며 안정지향적인 성향을 띠는 율격적 특성을 지닌다. 따라서 사대부의 문학으로 시작된 시조가 사대부의 사상과 긴밀한 관련을 맺고 있는 4음보격을 그 율격으로 채택하게 된 것 또한 앞선 구조에서와 마찬가지로 균형과 안정을 바라던 그들의 신분적 특수성이 반영된 결과라 할 수 있는 것이다. 이에 필자는 사대부의 사상이 잘 반영된 작품들을 실제로 분석해 봄으로써, 시조의 구조와 율격이 사대부의 사상을 오롯이 드러내기에 효과적인 그릇의 역할을 수행하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이러한 특성으로 말미암아 발현되는 시조의 형식과 관련된 문체의 미라 할 수 있는 형식미를 ‘均衡과 安定의 美’로 규정해 보았다.
그러나 시조의 문체미를 규정하는 작업은 결코 쉽지 않은 일이며, 이를 위해서는 시조의 본질을 깊이 조망하고 통찰할 수 있는 안목이 요구된다 할 것이다. 따라서 본고는 시조의 형식과 관련된 문체의 아름다움을 규명하고자 하는 試論的 성격을 띤다고도 할 수 있으며, 향후 이와 관련된 지속적인 관심과 논의를 통해서 본고에서 노정된 문제점들을 보완해 나가고자 하는 바이다.

영어초록

This paper is to find out the beauty of form or one of the literary styles in Sijo by analyzing the Sijo's form and structures which make up the Sijo. Sijo is a Korean poetic form which is made with 3 lines(or 6 half-lines) and each line has four syllables. The structure and rhyme here may be considered to be the literary features of Sijo which is related to the form of the sijo. Accordingly, the study on these two things is related to the finding out the beauty of form of the Sijo. It means that this study is to find out the beauty of form of Sino focusing on its structure and rhyme.
As we all know, Sijo is made with three lines with each line having two symmetric half-liens. Each lines have four syllables. In this paper, I would like to argue that Sijo's form putting emphasis on the balance, safety and rhyme was established by the people in charge of the literature in the period when the Sijo was born.
I found out that the Sijo's adoption of the specific form of 3 line and 6 half-lines having the balance, symmetry and stability in the first, second and third lines is caused by the nobilities who were the upper class group in the late Goryeo and Joseon dynasties. The upper class group enjoyed the lifestyle and literature which were far different from the lower class people. Their minds were oriented toward thinking positively of the then-current orders and situation rather than asking for changes or revolutions. Accordingly, the Sijo, one of the nobility's literature was made with emphasis on the balance and stability as the nobleman enjoyed the Sijo as their literature. In addition, I think that the form of 4 syllables in one line is also related to the nobility who enjoyed the Sijo at that period. It is assumed that the 3 syllables show the dynamic and change oriented features while the form of 4 syllables shows the static and safety oriented features. So, the fact that the form of 4 syllables in a line is adopted in Sijo shows that the people who started this form of literature and enjoyed it were oriented toward the balance and stability, showing that the structure of Sijo is just the reflection the nobility's with to keep the their social status or position at that time. I analyzed the literary works made by the noblemen at that period and found out that the Sijo's structure and rhyme were made by noblemen who wanted to keep that situation in a way that the beauty of balance and stability which are the key characteristics of Sijo have priority in its structure and form.
But the study to specify the beauty of form in Sijo is not an easy job. To conduct the study, the researcher needs the intuition and viewpoint which can see and check the essence of Sijo. So, this study may be the first step toward finding out the beauty of form in Sijo. I would like to make up for any problems exposed in this paper through the continuous study and interest in this field.
