[작은 것들의 신]에 나타난 식민지배의 연속성과 로이의 탈식민주의적 상상력 (The Continuity of Colonial Rule and Roy’s Postcolonial Imagination in The God of Small Things)

초록

Colonization is based on a ideologically built-in colonial structure which comprehensively embraces the physical, historical, cultural and spiritual aspects of colonizing experience: basically the experience of degradation and denigration of native cultures and their voices. It targets not only for the integration of the native economic history and political entity into the Western territories but also for the dehumanization of the colonized and their alienation from the traditional communal world. The legitimation of colonialism is consolidated by the fear of the colonizers on the colonized,as it is, the contempt of the civilized on the uncivilized. In this sense,globalization, or an era of neo-colonialism after independence of many colonies since the World War II should be also contested due to its euphemized practices and justifications of the privatization and imperial expansion of the global corporation powers. From this perspective,postcolonial imagination is required and possibly redeemed by reclamation of inherent tradition and recovery of self-rule spirit of natives through destruction of the colonial structure and its representations.
The God of Small Things is a novel that challenges and envisages the boundaries that were historically set up between the powerful and powerless by building a new way of seeing and thinking for the de-colonization of the Small from the Big. By dramatizing three generations of Ipe family, that is, the history of colonial alienation and thingification, Roy draws our attention to the continuity of colonial structure that has functioned to consolidate the perpetuation of old colonial history of domination even in the new era of globalization. In this sense the Ipe twins and Ammu-Velutha relationships show Roy’s consistent interest in the recovery of the connections and also her warning of the colonial human beings from their environment.
