초록

이 논문은 자전거와 관련한 19세기 후반의 일러스트레이션과 광고에 등장하는 서구 여성의 모습을 고찰한 글이다. 당시의 언론기사 삽화, 책과 잡지의 표지, 그리고 광고 포스터 중에서, 주로 여성이 등장하는 사례를 분석 자료로 삼았다. 이들 자료에는 당대 사회가 ‘새로운 탈 것’인 자전거와 ‘자전거 타는 여성’에 대해 보여준 관심과 열광 혹은 거부감, 그리고 상업적 의도와 같은 점들이 잘 반영되어 있다. 자전거 타는 여성들이 어떠한 관점과 시각을 통해 묘사되고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써, 당대 여성들이 처한 삶의 조건과 사회상의 일면을 규명하려 한다. 아울러 대상 작품들의 표현양식과 이미지를 논의하는 과정에서 그것들이 제작된 각 시기 시각디자인의 양식적 특징과 변화의 흐름도 어느 정도 파악될 수 있을 것이다.
이 논문은 19세기 후반의 자전거의 발달과정을 벨로시페드로 대표되는 초기 자전거, 하이 휠과 세 바퀴 자전거, 세이프티 자전거의 세 부분으로 크게 나누어 고찰하였다. 도입 초기에 자전거와 여성 라이더에게 투사되었던 진보성과 낯섦은 근대사회가 전개되면서 점차 희석되긴 하나, 19세기가 끝날 무렵까지도 여전히 자전거 타는 여성은 논란과 풍자의 대상이었다.
상류층의 전유물이던 자전거는 19세기 말의 자전거 붐을 거치면서 거의 모든 계층이 사용하는 일상적 교통수단으로 자리잡았다. 당시의 수많은 자전거 광고 포스터와 잡지 표지에는 보다 자유롭고 활기찬 이미지의 여성들이 모습을 드러내는 한편, 여성의 신체를 ‘볼거리’로 상품화하는 부정적 속성도 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This present study is dedicated to analyze the images of western women in the illustrations and advertising from the late 19th century related to bicycles. For this, article illustrations, book or magazine covers, and advertising posters from the century that mainly feature women at the time have been selected as study samples. These drawings indicate mixed reactions of the people back then, including attraction, enthusiasm, animosity, and commercial pursuit, towards the ‘bicycle, a new means of transportation’ and the ‘women riding bicycles’. The purpose of this study is to understand the social environment and life conditions of women in the 19th century by looking into how women on bicycles were described in drawings and from what perspectives. In the process of discussing the expression and image of each example, it is also feasible to study the style transformation in visual art over the time and the artistic characteristics of each stage.
This thesis is dividing the development of bicycles in the late 19th century into 3 phases: the early bicycle represented by Velocipede, the high wheel bicycles along with high wheel tricycles, and the safety bicycles. Although the implication of 'progressiveness' and 'offensiveness' projected upon bicycles and female riders at the vert initial stage had been diluted through the development of the modern society, women society, women on bicycles continued to be am object of controversy and satire even until around the end of the 19th century.
It is in consequence of the bicycle craze of the 1890s that bicycles, which had been monopolized by the upper class in the beginning, finally advanced into one of the daily means of transportation for almost everyone in the society. Numerous bicycle advertising posters and magazine covers during this time are showing more liberated and lively images of women. But in the meantime, they also demonstrate the negative side of portraying women's Bodies more for 'visual pleasure' with commercial purposes in mind.
