고전읽기 교육의 교육적 성과 검증을 위한 공동 연구－국내 4개 대학의 교육성과 진단을 중심으로 (Collaborative Research on the Educational Outcomes of Classical Reading Education : Focused on Diagnosing the Educational Performance of four Korean Universities)

초록

고전읽기 교육의 새로운 부상은 최근 교양교육의 중요한 특징 가운데 하나이다. 이 연구는 고전읽기교과목을 수강하고 있는 국내 4개 대학의 학생들을 대상으로 사전-사후 설문조사를 통해 고전읽기교육의 성과를 진단하고, 그 결과를 분석함으로써 고전읽기 교육이 구체적으로 어떤 성과를 거둘 수있는지를 확인하고자 한 것이다. 수도권 2개 대학과 충청권 및 대구⋅경북 지역에 각각 위치한 1개대학, 총 4개 대학에서 2023학년도 2학기에 고전읽기 교과목을 수강한 학생 총 339명을 대상으로조사한 결과, 고전읽기 교육은 대학별 교과목 운영의 특성이나 차이에도 불구하고 독해역량은 물론의사소통역량, 창의역량, 문제해결 효능감을 모두 증진시키는 것으로 드러났다. 특히 고전읽기 교육은상황이나 맥락에 따른 읽기, 텍스트에 대한 입체적 읽기, 추론적 읽기 능력을 함양하는 것으로 나타났다.
고전읽기 교육은 함께 수업을 듣는 동료 학생들과의 토론 및 토의, 성찰적 글쓰기를 통해서 내용에대한 정확하고 깊이 있는 이해는 물론 자신이 미처 주목하지 못했던 내용이나 의미까지도 새롭게찾아내게 함으로써 스스로 성장하고 성숙하는 경험을 할 수 있도록 해주었다. 이와 같은 경험은 학생들의창의역량 함양 및 문제해결 효능감 증진이라는 결과와 맞물리면서 고전읽기 교육의 성과를 뒷받침하였다. 고전읽기 교육은 또한 학업에 대한 학생들의 개인적 흥미만이 아니라 상황적 흥미까지도 긍정적으로변화시킨 것으로 나타났다. 학업에 대한 학생들의 이와 같은 의지와 태도의 변화는 능동적 학습 태도를형성하는 것과 긴밀하게 연결된다는 점에서 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 이번 연구를 통해 고전읽기교육은 사고의 폭을 넓히고 깊이를 깊게 하며, 지적 호기심을 자극하고 갈증을 충족시켜 줌으로써자신의 삶과 학업에 대한 의지와 자세를 새롭게 한다는 성과를 가지고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히그러한 교육성과가 특정한 개별 대학 차원에서 확인된 것이 아니라 서로 다른 지역에서 각기 다른수준의 학생들을 대상으로 서로 다른 방식으로 운영하고 있는 4개 대학에서 공통적으로 확인되었다는점에서, 이번 연구는 고전읽기 교육의 보편적 성과를 객관적으로 확인할 수 있게 해주었다고 하겠다.
이와 같은 교육성과를 야기하는 구체적인 요인들에 대한 보다 정치한 분석과 효율적 교육 방법에대한 모색은 후속 과제이다.

영어초록

The new rise of classical reading education is one of the important features of liberal arts education in recent years.
This study aims to diagnose the performance of classical reading education through pre- and post-surveys of students takingclassical reading courses at four universities in Korea, and analyze the results to determine what specific outcomes classicalreading education can achieve. Based on a total of 339 students who took a classical reading course in the second semesterof the 2023 academic year at four universities, two in the Seoul metropolitan area and one each in the Chungcheongbuk-doand Daegu/Gyeongbuk regions, the results showed that classical reading education promotes not only reading comprehensionbut also communication, creativity, and problem-solving efficacy, despite the characteristics and differences in the courseoperation of each university. In particular, classical reading education was found to foster contextual reading, thethree-dimensional reading of texts, and inferential reading. Through discussions and debates with classmates, reflective writing,and reflection, the classical reading experience allows students to grow and mature by developing a precise and in-depthunderstanding of the text, as well as through the discovery of new content and meanings that they hadn't noticed before.
These experiences, coupled with the results of fostering students' creativity and increasing their problem-solving efficacy,support the benefits of classical reading. Classical reading has also been shown to positively change students' personal andcontextual interest in academics. This change in students' willingness and attitude toward academics is very important becauseit is closely linked to the development of an active learning approach. This study confirms that classical reading educationhas the effect of broadening and deepening thinking, stimulating and satisfying intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge,and renewing students' commitment and attitudes toward their lives and their studies. In particular, the fact that these outcomeswere not identified at the level of individual universities, but were common to four universities in different regions, servingstudents at different levels, and operating in different ways, proves this study to be an objective confirmation of the universaloutcomes of classical reading education. A more politicized analysis of the specific factors that drive these outcomes andthe search for effective teaching methods is a future task.
