초록

이 글은 우리나라 최초의 철도노선인 경인선이 건설되는 과정을 다루고 있다.
경인선을 건설하는 과정에서 한성에는 두 곳의 철도정차장이 생기게 되었는데, 이는 수도의 관문이 되는 철도정차장이 두 개가 되는 것을 의미한다.
1876년 세계를 향해 문호를 개방한 조선은 여전히 중국과의 연결 루트를 중요시하는 가운데 서양과 만나는 길목인 인천의 중요성을 인식하기 시작했다. 인천에는 중국과 일본, 러시아에서 직항 증기선이 왕래하기 시작했고, 수도 한성과물리적 거리를 좁혀줄 경인철도의 필요성 또한 제기되었다.
조선에 철도가 도입된 직접적인 계기는 1894년 청일전쟁 발발직후 일본의 강압으로 맺어진 『朝日暫定合同條款』에서 비롯되었다. 하지만 이때는 영국, 미국, 독일, 러시아 등에서 공동으로 항의하면서 철도 건설로 이어지지 못했다. 조선철도의 부설은 1896년 아관파천 직후 시작되었다. 조선정부는 미국인 모스에게 경인철도의 부설을 허가하는 <<京仁間鐵路合同>>을 체결하였고, 이로부터 1년 이내에 모스는 기공식을 개최했다. 제물포에서 한성, 한성에서 제물포로 양방향에서 진행된 공사는 일본의 자금을 대여받은 모스에 의해 1898년까지 지속되었다.
이 과정에서 경성정차장이 건설된 것으로 보인다.
1898년 모스와 경인철도인수조합 간에 철도의 설계와 공사방법 등을 둘러싸고이견이 생긴 후, 다음해인 1899년부터는 일본의 경인철도인수조합이 직영으로공사를 재개했다. 1899년 9월 들어 경인철도의 제1공구에서 제3공구의 공사가 마무리되자, 9월 18일 제물포에서 노량진까지 경인철도가 개통되었다.
이 무렵 경인철도에는 큰 변화가 생겼다. 수도의 관문으로 기능할 경성정차장외에 남대문정차장의 신설이 결정되었던 것이다. 이 남대문정차장은 한성에 건설될 경부철도의 정차장이었다. 1898년 9월 8일 경부철도 부설권을 획득한 일본은 1년여 만인 1899년 9월 대한제국 정부와 협의하여 이 문제를 확정지었다. 이남대문정차장은 경인철도의 한강 이북일대 공사과정에서 건설되었다. 이에 따라한성에는 두 개의 경인철도 정차장이 들어섰다. 모스에 의해 건설된 경성정차장은 1905년 경부철도가 개통되면서 서대문역으로 변경된 후 1919년 폐지되어 사라졌다. 하지만 남대문정차장은 1923년 경성역이 된 이래 오늘날에도 서울을 대표하는 철도역으로 기능하고 있다.

영어초록

This article examines the process of constructing Korea`s first railway route Gyeongin line. In the process of constructing the first line, two railway stations were established in the capital of Korea, Hanseong, which means there were two railway stations being the gateways to the capital.
Joseon opened its door to the world in 1876, a time when it started to realize the importance of Incheon as a path to meet the West as well as a connecting route to China, which was still considered crucial to Joseon. Direct steam ships to and from China, Japan and Russia started operating in Incheon, making it necessary for Gyeongin Railways to be installed to shorten physical distances between Incheon and Hansung.
The installment of railways in Joseon originated from the forced signing of 『joiljamjeonghapdongjogwan(朝日暫定合同條款)』 ( Joseon-Japan Tentative Cooperation Provision) by Japan right after the breakout of the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894.
At the time, however, the construction of railways failed to initiate due to the joint objections by the UK, US, Germany and Russia and it started after the Korea royal refuge at the Russian legation in 1896. Joseon signed <<gyeongingancheollohapdong(京仁間鐵路合 同)>> (Gyeongin Railway Cooperation Agreement) that permitted an American named Morse to construct the Gyeongin Railway and its groundbreaking ceremony was held within a year from the signing of the agreement. The dual railway construction connecting Hanseong and Jemulpo had been stalled several times due to difficulties in providing hefty construction costs but continued until 1898. It is speculated that Gyeongseong railway station was built during that time.
After Morse and Gyeongincheoldoinsujohab(京仁鐵道引受組合) (Gyeongin Railway Acquisition Union) argued against each other over the design and construction methods of the railway in 1898, the Japanese Gyeongincheoldoinsujohab (Gyeongin Railway Acquisition Union) took over and resumed the construction project since 1899. The construction work was completed for Zone 1 through Zone 3 of Gyeongin Railway in September, 1899, and the railway opened its section from Jemulpo(濟物浦) to Noryangjin(鷺梁津) on September 18.
At that time around, there was a significant change in the railway. In addition to Gyongseong railway station as the gateway to the capital, a new decision was made to establish Namdaemun railway station. The station was to be installed for Gyeongbu railway(京釜鐵 道) to be set in Hanseong. Japan acquired its rights of construction of Gyeongbu railway in September 8, 1898 and one year after, it confirmed the deal in its consultation with the Korean Empire Government(大韓帝國 政府) in September, 1899. Namdaemun railway station was built during the construction process of Gyeongin railway in the northern part of Han river(漢江 以北地域). As a result, two Gyeongin railway stations were built in hanseong. Gyeongseong railway station constructed by Morse changed its name to Seodaemun station(西大門驛) with the opening of Gyeongbu railway in 1905 and was closed in 1919. However, Namdaemun railway station(南大門停車場) is still being functioned today as the one representing Seoul ever since it became Gyeongseong station(京城驛) in 1923.
