초록

19세기 후반에서 20세기 후반의 미술계는 그 이전 시기 상황과는 전연 다른 양상을 띠며 전개되었다.
19세기 경제의 근대화 물결은 화폐에 대한 인식을 변화시켰으며, 이는 서화에 대한 인식에도 영향을 미쳐서화를 경제적 가치를 지닌 상품으로써 인식하기에 이르렀다. 19세기 후반 전문 서화유통공간의 성행으로서화 매매의 범위가 전국적으로 확대되면서 서화의 구입이 더욱 자유로워지게 되었다. 이 시기 다양한 예술애호가들이 한국 회화를 대량으로 수집하기 시작했다.
근현대기 서화 수집과 후원에 있어서 주목할 만 한 점은 외국인의 활약이다. 외국인의 후원 방식은 매우 다양하며, 이들이 구입한 서화의 작가층 또한 폭넓다. 외국인 수집가들이 특정 작가나 화목을 대량으로구매해 간 사례도 적지 않게 발견되고 있다. 그 대표적인 예로 세리자와 케이스케(芹沢銈介, 1895~1984)를들 수 있다. 그는 染色家로서 높은 평가를 받고 있으며, 세계 미술공예품 수집가로도 널리 알려져 있다. 그는 20여 개국의 미술품 6000여 점을 수집했는데, 이 중 280여 점이 조선의 미술품이다. 세리자와 케이스케는 그가 수집한 조선의 작품들을 재해석하여 자신의 작품 세계에 반영시켰다. 그가 수집한 조선의 회화는자신의 작품 세계 정립에 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤다. 이러한 사실은 조선의 회화가 일본의 근현대기 미술공예 분야에 영향을 미쳤음을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 세리자와 케이스케의 조선의회화 수집과 그 의미에 대해 살펴보았다.
본 연구는 서화 수집가의 안목이 회화의 양식에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지에 대한 하나의 예를 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이 연구는 근대기 한국 회화의 수집과 유통에 대한 연구를 풍부하게 하고, 한국의 회화가 일본의 근현대기 예술에 미친 영향을 밝히는 데에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. 더 나아가 이 연구는 근현대기에 민화의 수요가 확대된 연유와 민화의 수요 확대가 회화사의 흐름에 미친 영향을 밝히는 데에도 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

Over the latter half of the nineteenth through the latter half of the twentieth century, the art world in Korea has developed in a completely different manner from the previous period. The nineteenth century wave of economic modernization has altered the perception of money and also led to a new view in which the painting and calligraphy became considered a commodity with commercial value. As specialized marketing channels of the artistic media flourished in the second half of the nineteenth century, the scope of their trading has expanded nationwide and allowed an easier access to purchasing them than ever before. It was this period when a diversity of art aficionados began collecting Korean paintings in a large number.
Foreign collectors and their activities deserve special attention with regards to the painting collection and patronage in this modern period. They endowed a sponsorship in various ways and purchased artworks from a wide range of Korean artists. It is not uncommon that an alien collector focused on a single Joseon artist or on a specific indigenous genre to build one’s collection at a huge scale. An exemplary figure is Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984), who earned a huge reputation not only as a textile designer with his special dyeing technique but also from collecting art and craft works throughout the world. Among his collection of approximately 6,000 items are Joseon artworks amounting to about 280. Furthermore, Serizawa put his reinterpretation of the Joseon art into his own artistic practice; and the collection of paintings from Joseon played a considerable role in shaping his artistic vision and production. The case of Serizawa’s activities illustrates that Joseon paintings have impacted the Japanese art and craft of the modern era. In this vein, this essay examines Keisuke Serizawa’s collection of Joseon paintings and its significance.
As a case study, this essay will show how a collector’s artistic discernment affected the history of painting styles. In addition, this study aims to enrich our understanding of Korean painting, its collection, and distribution in the modern era and thereby to shed a new light on the influence that Korean painting has on the modern and contemporary art of Japan. Besides, a reason why folk paintings enjoyed higher market demand in the twentieth century and the way in which such expansion of demand has influenced the history of painting will be illuminated together.
