개항기 외국인의 기록과 삽화를 통해 본 우리의 복식문화 (Our Costume Culture seen by the Foreign Record and Illustration in the Opening time of a Port)

초록

이 연구는 개항기 우리나라를 방문한 외국인들의 기록과 삽화를 통해 우리나라 사람들의 신체조건과 복식문화에 대한 외국인들의 인식을 살펴보고, 우리의 복식문화가 갖는 아름다움을 재발견하고자 하는데 연구 목적이 있다. 또한 그 과정에서 외국인이기 때문에 잘못 판단한 우리의 복식문화가 무엇인지 찾아내어, 올바르게 알릴 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 기대한다.
개항기 우리나라 복식문화에 대한 최초의 기록은 1816년의 맥레오드와 바질 홀의 항해기이다. 이후 조선을 방문한 외국인은 스페인을 비롯하여 네덜란드, 영국, 미국, 프랑스, 러시아, 헝가리 등이며 이들의 직업은 외교관, 학자, 여행가, 의사, 군인, 화가, 선교사 등 다양하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이들이 아름답다고 느낀 우리의 복식문화는 크게 모자와 흰옷, 그리고 색동으로 대별된다.
첫째, 개항기 우리나라를 방문한 외국인들은 우리나라를 ‘모자의 나라’라고 하였다. 이는 남자의 갓과 갈모는 물론 여자들의 모자에 있어서도 감탄을 금치 못하며 조선에서 가장 가지고 가고 싶은 품목으로 조바위, 아얌, 남바위를 꼽았다.
둘째, 개항기 우리나라를 방문한 외국인들은 우리의 복색을 ‘흰옷의 물결’이라고 하였다. 흰색에 대한 감정은 직물과 다듬이질, 세탁의 정도에 따라 백옥같이 밝은 흰색에서 거칠고 투박한 흰색까지 마치 음색의 향연과도 같다고 하였다.
셋째, 개항기 우리나라를 방문한 외국인들은 우리의 복식문화를 ‘색동의 축제’라고 하였다. 특히 흰색과 어우러지는 여러 가지 색깔의 색동과 허리띠, 고름, 주머니 등은 단조롭고 무미건조 할 수 있는 우리의 복식에 활기를 주고 축제 같은 느낌을 준다고 하였다.
더욱이 개항기 외국인들은 우리의 복식문화가 갖는 특징인 높은 모자가 흰옷과 어울려 키를 더욱 커보이게 하였으며, 여자들의 모자에 달린 술 장식과 끈, 색동 등은 단순한 복식구조를 느끼지 못할 정도로 화사함과 활력을 불어 넣어 우리나라 사람들의 신체조건을 극복할 수 있도록 하여, 중국이나 일본에 비해 우리나라 사람들을 더욱 매력적으로 보이게 했다고 평가하였다.
그러나 외국인이기 때문에 잘못 판단한 우리의 복식문화 또한 간과할 수 없다. 우리의 흰옷을 喪服으로 인식한 점, 우리 옷의 구성에 대한 이해가 부족했던 점, 발목이 높은 신발의 유래를 오해한 점 등은 앞으로 우리복식을 세계에 알리고자 하는 노력과 함께 새롭게 인식시켜야할 부분이다.

영어초록

This paper aims at observing the foreign cognition of the Korean physical condition and clothing & ornamental culture through the foreign record and illustration who have visited Korea in the opening time of a port, and rediscovering the beauty of our clothing & ornamental culture. Also, it is expected to find what is our clothing and ornamental culture which was misjudged by the foreigners in that course, and to be the motive informing it correctly.
The initial record of our clothing & ornamental culture in the opening time of a port is the navigating time of the MacLeord and of Basil in 1816. Later, the foreigner which have the visited Joseon visited Netherland, England, U.S.A., France, Russia, Republic of Hungary, including Spain, and their profession is varied of diplomatic, scholar, traveler, doctor, soldier, painter, missioner, etc. Nevertheless, our clothing and ornamental culture which they felt beautiful greatly made a general classification of hat and white dress, and cloth with stripes of many colors.
First, the foreigners in the opening time of a port called Korea the ‘country of hat’. This means that they didn’t stop to exclaim of the men’s traditional cylindrical Korean hat (gat)and rain cover for a hat(galmo) but also the women’s hat, and to mention the hat(chobawui), the long silk tail attached to a women’s cap(ayam) and fur-lined hood (nambawul) as to have in Joseon.
Second, the foreigners in the opening time of a port called our dress the ‘white wave’. The feeling of white color is said the same as the banquet of timber according to the extent of textile and fulling cloth by pounding, laundry from the bright white color as white gem to crude white color.
Third, the foreigners in the opening time of a port called our clothing & ornamental culture ‘festival of cloth with stripes of many colors(sackdong)’. Specially, cloth with stripes of many colors and belting, breast-tie, and pocket which is of vary color in harmony with white color, and is monotonous & insipid is said to give our dress the vigor and the same feeling as festival.
Besides, the foreigners in the opening time of a port evaluated that the hat made the height bigger in harmony with the high hat, the characteristics of which our clothing and ornamental culture have, and it made the Koreans more attractive than the Chinese and Japanese overcoming the physical condition of Koreans with luxury and vigor so that tassel & cloth with stripes of many colors which decorated women’s hat are not felt the clothing frame.
However our clothing and ornamental culture can be overlooked the foreigner has misjudged. The wanting part to recognize newly with the effort that informs the world our dress is the point of which are our white clothing are recognized mourning clothes was wanting the understanding of frame of our clothing; and was misunderstood the origin of high boots.
