개항기 ‘체육’ 담론의 수용과 특징 (Characteristics of Modern Physical Education Discourse in the late 19th Century Korea)

초록

본 연구는 기존 연구에서 미진했던 부분들, 즉 개항기 체육에 대한 정보와 지식이 처음 소개‧유입되는 시점과 다양한 수용 통로를 확인하였다. 아울러, 조선적 체육담론이 형성되어 가는 과정과 특징, 그리고 체육교육과 제국주의 국가들과의 상관관계를 추적해 보았다.
개항기 조선에 도입된 체육과 운동은 서양처럼 개인의 다양한 목적과 다양한 운동 종목을 즐기는 것이 아니었다. 체육과 운동회의 이면에는 정부와 계몽사상가들의 ‘충량한 근대인 만들기’, ‘국가의 부름에 즉각적으로 반응하는 애국적 신체 만들기’라는 면밀한 기획에 따라 엄격한 규칙과 규율이 적용되고, 치열한 생존경쟁이 도입되며, 민족주의적 색채가 덧씌워진 것이었다. 더 이상 우리의 몸은 개인이나 가족의 것이 아니라 국가와 민족을 위해 존재하는 몸으로 분류‧배치되었다. 이렇듯 조선의 체육담론은 민족주의가 내면화되는 장이자 새로운 근대인을 제조해내는 신체 권력으로 고안되었고, 학교의 체육교과를 통해 실현‧확산되었다. 한편, 근대적 신체는 만드는 주체에 따라 역이용 될 수도 있는 것이었다. 서양 군인들에 의해 전유되었던 외국어학교의 경우 그러한 가능성이 높게 나타났다. 실제로 아어학교 졸업생은 러일전쟁기 러시아의 첩보활동에 동원되었던 것이다.

영어초록

This paper analysis the characteristics and the shaping up of Korean modern physical education(PE) discourse. The author tries to elaborate the adoption of various discourse related to the physical education(PE) in detail and asserts that the diplomatic envoys to Japan in 1881 was the first occasion to understand and to adopt physical education to the Korean Government. Soon Koreans began to accumulate deep knowledge on the physical education through newspapers, reports and books written by overseas student and foreign envoys.
The typical Korean modern physical education acquired the characteristics of nationalism and modernism as the government officials and intellectuals found it useful in making disciplined and healthy body which was required in the industrial sector and military unit. The Education Department in Gapo Government adopted military training in the high school PE class. This was to train high school boys as modern pre-soldiers in times of trouble and national ordeal. For that reason, they had employed retired military personnel as the teachers for the PE class.
On the whole the author asserts that PE class was used to internalized royalty, patriotism and nationalism to students and was also used as a means to make 'modern men with modern body'. Which meant to train human body to response readily to the orders and be faithful to the Emperor. However the patriotic intellectuals tried to train our body to response to the orders of the nation state. This kind of norm and discourse was propagated through school PE class.
The author also argues that this PE class was also used as the infiltration ground for imperial countries. For example, in Russian School led by former Russian colonel, trained Korean youth and later used them in Russian military espionage during the Russo-Japanese War.
